Im having a rebarrel done to a ruger rifle changing a 30-06 to a 6.5-06. The new barrel measures .625 at the muzzle is 26" long and weighs in at 3 pounds. Should I go heavier or is this plenty heavy for bench rest shooting. I plan to hunt with it also. Need your advice.

No need to go heavier, thats just fine for hunting, maybe even a little heavy. Light barrels are easier to carry but sometimes are tough to get to shoot, if you're using in for both bench and hunt you should be ok

I shoot a 25-06 Ruger 77RV with the full varmit weight barrel and shoot it for deer, yotes, and targets and love it. Since i use the sneak and peek method of hunting deer the weight dosn't seem to be a problem for me and as all my rifles are in the 10lb weight class im used to it. But the medium weight should make a good shooter for you.

Unless your rippin' 50 rounds an hour out of it, your fine. The heavier barrels have the edge over sporter weights in rapid repeat shots over short periods of time. Shot for shot, a good sporter is as good as a good heavy weight. A heavy barrel does "settle" on a target easier, but if your schlepin' that thing for any extended period of time, you want to save a few pounds.

I'm used to shooting long barrel muzzleloader that are barrel heavy and ya for long distances but a sporter weight barrel just dosn't hang right for me after shooting the MLs and shooting offhand with the heavy barrel is a dream. Really cuts down on the barrel bounce from the heartbeat. Been doing this for so long I really don't think about the weight anymore.

6.5s4ever, I just had a Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 (6.5-06) done by Hart Barrels. This rifle is my son's and I had Hart contour the barrel to the original barrel contour out to the end of the stock and then continue @ .665 to the end of the muzzle set at 24". It shoots MOA and I'm having one built right now for myself in 6.5-06 with a little heavier #5 contour. Who is doing your barrel?

Wyt Tail My barrel is being manufactured by Shaw Barrel company out of Pittsburgh,PA The gunsmith who is fitting it is D&D Custom Rifles in Vandergrift,PA. He said that going heavier wasnt necessary and the gun should shoot fine off of the bench with that weight barrel. The barrel does have a nine inch twist.

6.5s4ever, my son's and mine ( when I get it back) have a 1 in 9" twist also. You will be very happy with your 6.5-06. I mainly shoot 120gr. Nosler B.T. for Deer but also like the 140gr. Sierra SBT's.
Let us know how it comes out,
Jude;)
