Has anyone out there ever hunted Boar with an SKS? I am wondering if this would be an underpowered round for hunting hogs with.

I've killed a 150lb. wild hog with a 4" .357 mag, at 50yds the bullets were going completely through. So I'd have no problem taking on a larger hog at 200yds with my SLR-95.

I think it'd be enough...Know your limits and make sure you get a good shot and I don't see why not! I've got an SKS that nobody thinks I should hunt with because it doesn't have "olimpic target accuracy" But 3 inch groups at 100yds will take a hog.

Beagler,
They make these guns where?
You think they might have shot one of them Rooshin Boars with one of them Rooshin Rifles?
HEll Yea!!!
We have busted feral hogs down in South Carolina with SKS,MAK-90 and DPMS(AR-15 clone)in 7.62X39mm!Used 125grain Sierra FPHP and 125grain 30caliber Nosler Ballistic-Tips in are handloads and the boy's down there were shooting 123grainSP's and not having trouble keeping the porkers pacified!
It is no match rifle but it takes a licking and keeps on shooting! We get 2"-3"groups at 100yards but all piggies were shot at not much over 100 FEET!Easy to carry, reliable and easy on the ole pocket-book(gun and ammo both!)!!

Good hunting Beagler!

I like that ugly SKS. If you take a good look at the action and how it works you will see an ingeniusly simple design. There is a guy at the shooting range that has a russian made SKS. He has accurized it himself but wont realy say what or how he did it. I have seen him shoot reloads in less than an inch at 100yds. I thought if he could do it I can too....Well I glass bedded everthing I could. I polished the trigger. I had that ugly front sight cut off and had a stainless muzzel brake installed (just for looks) I put a 6X scope on it. Synthetic stock. It was a great looking SKS.......Yeah you guessed it. Still a 3MOA rifle. Oh well it was a fun project anyway.

The first rifle I used on woodchucks was a SKS paratrooper(16"barrel)will open sights, shot at them from 100 yards to 300 yards.200 rounds later I finally hit one but I will tell ya they are a fun and definitely a cheap gun to shoot. They are kinda ugly but the design is simple and very reliable.

I really like the little Simonov carbine. The only problem with using it for hunting, IMHO, is the bullets themselves. Handloaded, they are about like a .30/30 if effectivness. It has been my observation over several years, that the imported 123,124 grain HP and SP have not given good performance on game. Substitute a good commercial bullet, and it takes on a whole different aspect. All of my SKS carbines are hunting accurate, reliable, and darn fun to shoot.
