This fall will be my daughters first Elk hunt(she is 13)and she is running, lifting weights and carrying a pack around to get ready! Her older brother told her that girls will only slow us down due to the whinning!
He has started WWIII!She is out to prove that a 13year old girl can do as much as a 18year old BOY!I just hope they don't end up carrying me off the mountain!LOL

I'm 55, retired, and live in Wisconsin. I hunt Wis. whitetails with bow and rifle, and s.e. Wyoming mulies, I just picked up a Tikka in 7mm-08 and plan on using it this year if it performs. My first trip to the range, I dumped my ammo box, (handloads) so fired the rifle with a bunch of unknowns. I got 1 group at 5/8 inch but don't know what it was or if it was a combined group...what a mess...

I am 55, retired from teaching , turned farmer and retired from that. I decided that hunter/fisherman would be my third career choice. I live and hunt in Sask.
Stithe, I also shoot a Tikka and I think you will be happy with your rifle.
There is something about a big butted mulie that makes them my favorite game. I have taken mulies with various calibres of rifles, muzzleloaders and black powder cartridge rifles.

I'm 31 and live near Vancouver, British Columbia. Have always loved to fish, mostly trout, but just got hooked on hunting last Fall. Borrowed a rifle, Remington .280, and went hunting mulies with a friend in Whitecourt, Alberta. Not being a resident Albertan, I chose not to buy a deer tag at $125.00 and settled on a bear tag at just over $60.00. Needless to say, everyone tagged a mulie except me and I would have had a freezer full of venison if I had bought that darn tag as we saw several nice deer after everyone had already got theirs. I did, however, make my first shot count and got a medium sized black bear at about 150 yds. Beautiful reddish-brown hide, should be about ready at the tanners in Edmonton when I go back this year. I've bought my own rifle now, a Browning Gold Medallion in .300 win mag with a Bushnell Elite 3200 mounted on top, and you can be sure I'll be forking over the money for that deer tag this year. We're thinking of going hunting near Edson for elk at the start of the season so I'll probably end up taking out a second mortgage and buying a non-resident elk tag as well.

Good hunting everyone, I really look forward to swapping stories at the end of the season.

I live in northern Montana and am 33 years old. I recently started applying for out-of-state tags, but was turned down for WY and UT (I will be hunting SD and here in Mt this year). Thankfully deer season is just about here (archery starts Sept. 1)

Good luck to all and I hope to see some photos from everyone's trophy in the next couple of months.

Thank you grayghost. My wife tells me I had better not tell to many of my stories or the police will be aknocking at the door. Hunted Africa when it was still legal to hunt ivory, took a nice tusker and then some idiot broke into our house and stole one of the tusks. Me and friend hunted him down, got my tusk back - and I'll leave that story right there.

Hi everyone. I'm 45 and live in Idaho. I'm a lifelong resident and hunt bear, elk, whitetails, mule deer, waterfowl and grouse. My favorite is glassing for bear. I love the time of the year(mid September) and the country(high mountain huckleberry patches). I always seem to be running the ridges. Good luck to all during the upcoming season.

Hello everyone. I love reading these kinds of threads. I will be 60 when I come back from my first out of state/non resident hunt in Colorado. Got lucky in the draw for a Mulie, It will be just outside the CO National Monument west of Grand Junction. I will be hunting with some "whipper-snappers" (35-40) that have hunted together for many years. They are from all over the states and convene each year to hunt various game in various states and I feel privileged to have been asked to hunt with them.

I have hunted since I was old enough to hold a .22 rifle to my shoulder and pull the trigger for rabbit. Most of my hunting has been in Calif., some in OR. And WA and AK when I was a Regular in the Coast Guard. An ugly divorce and such took me away from the hunt for many years but I AM BACK as long as my feet will get me there and I don't care if they get me back. I love being out there scouring the terrain and enjoying the beauty of it all.

I don't know if any of you "old timers" remember the comic strip Rick O'Shey. The author (I forget his name) was quite a philosopher. My favorite character was 'Hipshot Percussion', the local gun fighter/good guy. My favorite strip was one panoramic panel of a magnificent Montana like view of a mountain, with the woods and the trail leading to the overlook littered with local flora and fauna. It was a great pastoral scene upon which Hipshot, with an Indian scabbarded rifle crooked in his arm and sitting on a beautiful Painted Pony said "Thank you God". That is what I feel like when I am hunting.

I hope you all tag your animal(s) this and every year.

Good hunting and a great life to you all.

I'm a young 52 and a native Arizonan. Haven't killed every game species Arizona has to offer yet, but I'm working on it. I didn't draw a tag this year, so I'll be hunting mule deer in a few weeks with my bow, then will try to call in a good-sized black bear in October. Archery elk hunting during the rut, though, is my passion. Then there's the dove opener tomorrow morning (those little kamikazes!)...

I am 19 years old and live in Sacramento, CA. Been hunting since I was 13 and have always gone after deer here in Northern California. This year, I really started to get into it since it is the first year I have been driving and hunting is a lot easier when you have your own 4x4 pick-up to get you there. I havent gotten a deer yet but shot my first animal besides a robin this year. It was a jackrabbit with my new NEF single shot 12gauge. This will also be my first year bear hunting here in Ca and I cant wait.

Hello all, I'm 47, and presently live in the great state of Northern California. {our southern border is just north of Sacramento} I've hunted, lived, and worked as a packer all over the western US. Did my time at Lassen college in the gunsmithing program up in Susanville.
I can find an excuse to hunt just about anything I can find the time and money to get to.

33, Vancouver, British Columbia. First Hunt was when I was 13 in the Kootenays with my Grandma. Love to chase ghost deer (blacktails) and Black bears in the rainforests of the coastals. Every few years i try to kill myself in the Kootenay-Rocky mountains hunting Wapiti. This year I'm taking my younger cousin up to the northern border for his first time. He's got a moose tag, I've got the lottery draw for Thinhorn Sheep and Grizzly.

PS- mtmiller, checkout WY again, they've got some leftover tags on their site.

I have three ages, chronological-63 y/o, physicial-40 y/o and mental-5y/o. I live in my native State of Maine and took my first whitetail at age 12 with a Model 94. Since retiring 5 years ago, I hunt 5+ months a year, and spend the rest of the year getting ready to hunt. I am most fortunate in that I have hunted all over the world and have taken 99 species of game. I spend about 50 days a year in the Allagash Wilderness of Northern Maine, hunting in season, collecting shed moose antlers in the winter and spring, and hiking and canoeing. After 21 years of appling, I finially drew a Maine moose permit and in MY OWN ZONE. I reload, muzzleload, and have had a dozen stories published in hunting magazines. Since I am away from my computer so much there may be long lapses between my postings. Tough job but someone has to be out there in the woods. Codger

Hey ya'll! I'm 19 from southwest Montana and have been tagging along since I was about 6 or so, and been hunting by myself since I was 12. I hunt everything there is to offer just about. Antelope, whitetails, mulies, elk, grouse, pheasants, partridge, and every once in awhile ducks and geese. I hunt big game with a .270 Ruger M77, baut will start bow-hunting for whitetails starting next year. Hunt birds with a Mossberg 500 12 gauge always with a full choke. I already filled my antelope tag (12 inch buck), and hope to get some good hunting in this season. Good luck to all you other hunters, and remember to be safe.

Grayghost -- I am 59 years young and live in old Kentucky just up the road from you. I started hunting at 5 yrs. old as an apprentice retriever for doves, squirrels, and quail. I graduated to hunting later and hunt everything that walks, flys or leaves sign. I backkpack and climb with a daughter who is determined to climb the high points of all the states, except Alaska, I started her and now I am just trying to keep up. I hunt Deer at home and everything out West and Alaska. I shoot for the pure pleasure of it, and to better prepare myself, my son and four grandson,s for the future. I love a new rifle project, all mine are off shelf except two, they are customs I got a deal on I couldn't turn down. If I didn't have an underestanding wife I couldn't do any of it, she knows I have to do it and is encouraging, plus it keeps me out of her hair. Looking forward to Colorado in three weeks for Elk. Good post and good Shooting.:p

Iam physically 55 years old, physically about 45 and mentally about 2. I live in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts. I do a little hunting in Mass however my spare time is spent in the state of Maine.

I do a little duck and goose hunting around Mass. Waterfowling is OK if you can deal with the crowds. Deer hunting in pretty good. We have a 2 deer limit. We can get some pretty decent size deer(State record is 280 lbs) however most are in the 160-180 range. Understand that there is no limit on deer on Natucket Island which is a 3 hour boat ride from the main land.

As I said, I spend a lot of time in Maine. Do ducks, grouse and woodcock. Been a little slow this year. I spend about 2 weeks in November chasing big Maine whitetails. Normally hunt either central Maine but sometimes near the Allagash region. Probably bumped into Codger at some point.

I grew up in the state of Kansas and got the bug for hunting at about 6 thanks to my dad. Mostly hunted ducks and pheasnts. There were very few deer then.

Left Gods country for a tour with Uncle Sam in the Mid 60's and just didn't go back. Oh well that another story.

I am currently 41, some days feels a little older but most of the time I act quite a bit younger! Have lived here on the Kenai Penninsula since 1978. Left the Pacific Northwest two weeks after graduation and never looked back. Never really got into hunting much as a youngster. Spent most of the time chaseing my father through the woods. Really developed my passion for hunting here in the "Great white North". I have taken more trophy moose then should be legal and have done a pretty good number on trophy caribou also! I am slowly developeing an interest in the horned animals after I harvested a mountain goat last year so its possible that I may try to put a sheep or two on the wall some day! I have a passion for flying as much as I do for hunting so they both go hand in hand when living here in Alaska! I have said it before and this seems like the time to say it again, I love to talk hunting stories and huntchat.com is an excellent outlet to do exactly that! Good luck to all! :) :) :)
