I am trying to determine if I am going to use a trap cap or use the trap covers.
What do you guys use and why?

I canine trap in almost pure sand. It is hard to get a trap bedded solid in it as it doen't pack very well. I never tried a trap cap but do not think htat it would pack well enough to keep the sand from getting underneath the pan.

I also use ant hill dirt to cover my traps in freezing weather to keep my traps from freezing up. It doesn't pack either so would filter underneath the pan.

I don't often canine trap but when I do I use trap covers. Usually wax paper.
Most of the time I use whatever is handy. Leaves, grass and don't bury the trap.
But mostly I use snares.

i use a homemade trap cap, made from a gas antifreeze bottle.
i also use wax paper cut to almost size, wrinkled to stop noise.

I use nylon screening material they sell at Lowe's for screen replacement. Just cut to the inside dimensions of what ever trap size you are using and then boil them when doing your traps for the season.

I use regular toliet paper, or unscented tissues. I've caught fox and coon with these, only thing is they don't last long if its really rainy all week, so it all depends on the weather. But this is mainly what I use. Also I sometimes use ziplock plastic bags. I cut out a square of plastic big enough to fit over the pan and under the jaws.

The pan cover is used to keep dirt from getting under the trap pan so that the pan is unable to travel far enough to allow the trap to fire. I always used wax paper that I also wrinkled up before putting over the pan to stop any noise when the paper is stepped on.

A trap cap is a device that goes around the trap pan when setting. You can pack the dirt solid around it while setting without the trap firing. IMO If you are setting in sand like I have around here it wouldn't pack solid enough that it wouldn't sift down under the pan in time.
