choke tubes/ heavy shot

With the Heavy shot loads on the market now, can the use of the led shot turkey tubes that say came with the 835 be used? Is it too hard a shot even though it isn't steel to use standard chokes or do I need to use the steel shot tubes?....

You will still have to use the steel shot tubes.... If anything hevi shot is even harder than steel shot. If using a size like #6 you may be able to go as tight as Improved modified choke. Hevi shot is made of Tungsten nickle and steel...really hard stuff but really good stuff

Hevi-shot is harder than steel and the pellets are tear drop shaped (i.e., not completely round). So, I will second Skeet's statement. Personally, I use a Patternmaster choke tube for waterfowling with Hevi-Shot and Steel. Seems to work fine.

ok..first of all it is hevi shot and not heavy shot like I put before...and thanks for the tube info...nothing is mentioned of this in what I have read or heard about in adds...

Didn't even notice that you used "heavy" instead of Hevi.

Hevi-Shot and Remington don't advertise that the shot is tear drop shaped and not perfectly round like steel. Probably because they don't want people to worry about scoring their barrels with it. However, the tear drop shape is what makes Hevi-Shot so aerodynamic and allows it to provide really good patterns (i.e., there are no fliers out of the pattern). Steel usually has a tighter shot string than lead because the pellets don't deform on firing and hence steel has less fliers than lead. The killing power of steel just sucks.

Remington says that their hevi-shot turkey loads are buffered and you can use any choke tube. Have shot the remington loads in 835 chokes and have not had a problem, but check with them on what choke they recommend to be sure.

ok..thanks all..will get in touch with mossburg....did some patterns the other day..started out at 10 yds at turkey target..not bad but 1/2 inch to left with the glow sights...did just a fine tune to right and at 40yds....yea...dinner....

don't use average choke tubes for hevi-shot. They generate a lot more pressure than average lead or steel loads. Cheap little 835 mossberg chokes would cause the gun or chokes damage. In many cases, the barrel could basically blow up.
