marlin 1895 cowboy

this gun looks awsome. definantely a throw-back to the "old days". anyone have one and shoot/hunt with it? seems like a great OLD long range deer/black bear rifle with some stout loads and a tang sight.

Sorry for not answering before now, didn't see this one untill today.

I don't have one but I've handled them several times in contiplation of that purchase.

When I finally got ready to buy one, I got a look at the 1894 Cowboy Limited in .45 Colt. the wood was gorgious and the finish was first rate. Besides I have a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt and I'm afraid that it got the better of me and I bought it instead.

The .45-70 1895 Cowboy is still in the back of my mind for the reasons that you stated and many more. With the .45 Colt it kind of reminds me of the model 73 winchester in general looks (not quite, but kinda sorta). Then I learned more about handloading a little hotter than factory for the .45 Colt and I got to thinking about duplicating the .45-60 cartridge instead of the .45-70.

I've exceeded the capabilities of the .45-60 by more than 300 fps with a 300 grn bullet and that was what I was after anyway.

Oh well, I can get close to the .45-70 300 grain factory loads with the Colt and exceed the .46-60 loads at will. I think I will stay with the one that I've got, at least for the near future.

I know that isn't what you asked about but I got to rambling. Sorry for the off topic response.
