Indiana Deer reg's now allow rifles shooting pistol cartridges.

The following cartridges are legal. 357 mag 41 mag 44 mag and 41/44 special 44-40 winchester, 45 colt, 454 casual, 475 linebaugh, 480 ruger, 50 Action express, and 500 S&W plus cartridges that have min case length of 1.16 inches and a max case lenght of 1.625 inches and fire a .357 or larger round.

I guess the 35 rem would not be legal in a rifle but is legal in a pistol, cause it is normally a rifle round. and max case is over 1.625 inches. Of course i have one with 18 inch barrel in contender carbine. I can shoot that round in a pistol, and 30-06, 270, 243, legally.

Since my shotgun is good to a max of 200 yards as it is setup. (With a whopping drop of 8 inches) and the contender pistol in .35 rem is good to just under that distance on paper. What rifle would do better than what i have already.

I think the handi-rifle is avalible in 500 S&W but would it be a 100-200 yard round. Then again i have not shot a deer over 100 yards in years and normally would not attemp the shot over 100 unless i had a perfect rest and non windy conditions.

I can get my greedy little hands on a 44 mag lever and a 44 mag auto from ruger. Is anyone making rifles for the 454, 480 or 500 S&W? and if they are would i really be gaining anything over the 12 guage setup i have now.

P.S. i love lever guns.

Here's another idea. Look into getting a carbine length barrel for your contender in .357 maximum. It's an extremely good round, and drops deer like a hammer. Sounds like you have pretty much what you'll need already, but a .44 carbine would work well too.

It doesn`t really matter if you need a new gun or not, because you don`t and you know it!!! The thing is do you want a new gun and can you afford it, and pay no attention to what the wife says. ;) Personally I prefer handguns because they are easy to carry. I pack a revolver when driveing deer and an Encore when when ambush hunting, unless in muzzle loading season. It does sound like you need a new lever gun. For more range I would recomand the .357 max., or the .460 Ruger, if they make the lenth requirements.

Boy are you in luck! I was looking through my American Rifleman and on pqge 56 found just what your looking for. Rossi is makeing a Rep. model of the 1892 Win. for Legacy Sports. ( an importer from Reno, nv.) It comes in .38 -.357, .44 mag, .454 Casull and .480 Ruger. Get the .454 and you`ll be able to fire .45 colts also. Isn`t it great to have friends to help you find just the gun you need, no matter what your wife says. :D
