I am gettin ready to till up about 5 acres of sun slammed field that currently has about crotch deep mahaya (mahair? Muh somthinanother) grass on it that NOBODY wants for free hay around here. I am going to turn that part of the property into a food plot. We are talking about land with good drainage, decent soil, not nearly enough water on this particular spot, and about 900+ hours of sunshine a day. Been a cowpasture for 97 or so years. Now its an empty pasture.

ANYWAY

I am thinking about planting a mixture of oaks, and peas, but I would like to throw two more food sources into the mix. Clover is out because the PH is off and I can't afford to sink thousands into this plot to change it (nor do I want the runoff into the springs 75 yards away) I have considered alfalfa, but the water or lack thereof could be an issure. Chickory won't do much better.

Any ideas?

Had one guy suggest I throw okra seed in with it.

Chickpeas will work, don't need ph high so no lime needed. Just plant them like soybeans.

I have been pruning and rooting Honeysuckle vines and now have to cover the plants with wire mesh or the deer will eat the whole plant. I just do the fencerows with honeysuckle.

You might try some buck wheat in part of it. I hear it`s real good for deer.
