On Monday, December 1, 2008, the PA rifle deer season opens for two weeks. Once again I must select a few favorite "as issued" arms for the big woods. First up is my M1896 Krag Carbine followed by a P-17, a MkIII, a Swiss K31 and a 98K. I have worked up accuracy loads for these arms and will rotate the service afield.

Is anyone else hunting with military surplus arms this deer season?

I expect to use either a Kar98k, VZ-24, Swiss 1911 or a P-14 this season. There are other candidates, but these are the front runners right now. All the best...

If i get to go this year (twisted/spained my ankle really bad friday), I will be using either M44 or my SMLE.

all depends on the ankle. It's a heavily wooded/brushy area, so no more than 100 yard shots.

gumpokc,

I hope you get to hunt this year.

I like iron sights on my "as issued" arms. Around here most shots are under 100 yards, so old militaries are in their element.

Thankie Adam, hope you ,Gill, and everyone else has a great hunt as well!

I like the SMLE and M44 as brush guns since they are shorter than most standard rifles, but not lacking in performance, even if they aren't brand new hightech rifles.

If I want more range, I can always grab a 91/30 or turk mauser (8mm) and go out to any reasonable range that iron sights can be used at.

Alot of people simply don't seem to realise what a surplus arm is decent condition is capable of.

Anyways, wish you guys all the best, my your hunts be memorable and fun!

hehe my roomie got a deer with his smokepole, and I got a piggy earlier this year with my M44, so we arent hurting for meat.
I enjoy the hunt if I take a deer or not, but I won't say no to a nice full freezer either :)

The forcast here in PA for the Monday rifle deer season opener is rain in the morning and snow in the afternoon. If it snows, I will carry the M70 30-06 made in 1938. If rain, I will carry my favorite Yugo M48A. I can still use iron sights and I am only hunting for bucks.
