I know someone out there will be able to identify this revolver. Smith & Wesson 6-shot revolver marked 38 S&W Special CTG s/n 91K6XXX. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There should be a model number stamped in the thingie(sorry Sr Moment) that hold the cylinder. Open the cylinder and see if it is there. Then again maybe not. It should say something like mod 17-3 or so.

If it is old enough, it won't have a model number because way back they just had names for them, like Military and Police (which this just might be). But it probably does have a model number stamped there on the frame and under the crane. Open the cylinder and look.

Or send it to me and I'll identify it for you - after a few years.

A Smith & Wesson 6 shot revolver in 38 Special. . . that narrows it down to a couple hundred possible models. :)
A picture would be a big, big help.

jplonghunter,

The guys are on the right track. Just a few more questions: Is it a J frame, K frame or N frame? What is the barrel lenght? Swing out the cylinder and tell us what it says. Also look for any other markings on the butt or backstrap. One more thing, does it have a lanyard loop on the butt?

jplonghunter,

You have an adjustable sight, double action .38 Special with a K frame.

That is a Smith & Wesson Combat Masterpiece, the -4 means the fourth modification IIRC. That's one of the nicest .38 Spl. handguns S&W ever made
The also made it in .22LR as well with a different number but the same name. It was supposed to duplicate the .38 in practice and used the much cheaper .22 ammo.
Basically, it is the K-38 target pistol with a 4" barrel. It wouild take an awfully large amount of green to get me to part with mine.
