Hey Everyone,
I want to buy a new barrel for my T/C Cougar 50 cal caplock. The barrel in the T/C cougar now has several pitted areas, and it's never shot anything consistent. I like the Green mountain barrel in 54 caliber 1:70 twist. so my question is, the Gm barrel is 4 inches longer, will this upset the nice balance this rifle has? also Gm says their barrel is a drop in replacement, is there anything I may need to do? they say it should fit without any modification, at least I hope so. Thanks in advance for all your input.:D

I don't know anything about the T/C cougar, and I don't know if the extra 4" will cause problems or not, but if it does, I don't see any reason why a competent, black powder gunsmith couldn't lop off 4" to make the rifle handle as it did before.

I don't know about GM barrels, but if they say it is "drop in", I would buy one.

The T/C cougar was a limited Edition T/C Hawken. It has a beautiful stock, with a stainless steel lock and butt plate. I was just going to hang it on the wall, but a few of my friends talked me out of it, they think it would be worth replacing the barrel.

The 'Cougar' is simply a T/C Hawken varient...it has presentation grade wood and stainless furniture...otherwise, its the exact same Hawken dimensions in enery respect...have three of them.

T/C's own 1:66" round ball barrels are 32"...GMs barrels are copies of TCs specs.
I have several GM barrels on T/C Hawken stocks...a .40cal, two .54s, and two 62s.

Enjoy!

I have a Green Mountain .54 smoothbore barrel on a T.C Hawken. It was not a true drop in. The under barrel rib would not clear the brass forend of the stock. A few minutes with a file and some cold blue made it a drop in. Take care...
