Been shooting nusance birds with a RWS 17 cal. pellet gun. At around 900 fps it's good for 40 yard or so. Several crows learned the range real quick and liked to hang out at about 100 yards taunting me. Unbeknownst to them I purchased a CZ 425 in 17 HMR. They didn't even bother to fly when I poked it out the side door. But one did fly apart! Unfortunately, the other one has been reeducated in estimating distance.
The CZ American shoots as nice as it looks.
Hitting a grapefruit sized water filled ballon at 200 yrds is no problem. But wind does affect the accuracy of the little pill.

Good shooting Cossack they sure are good medicine for them pesky birds. Yeh the wind is a big factor with the little 17 gr. bullet.Gona try mine next week on ground hogs.Has anyone bin shooing the 20 gr. ammo.I have'nt yet tried it myself. Glad to read these experiances.;)

I dont know anyone who likes the 20gr bullets.

When I tested the knockdown power on centerfire silhouettes at 100y, the 17gr bullet had better results.

i love my 17 in encore barrel and have always liked the more popular names in guns but -- i have to hand it to my dad for buying a savage rifle in 17 its a model 93 something 17hmr - it has a wood stock and not an expensive looking high dollar rig but let me tell ya - it probably has not been cleaned since he bought it and he shoots the hornady 17gr varmint express cartridges in it and i am here to tell you it shoots - surprised me but a crow or ground hog certainly dont stand a chance -- and paper well i wont admit that a gun that cost less than a barrel for the t/c will outshoot me but lets say it shoots ok - will leave it at that - 100 yard gun for sure - so tell me anyone know about savage and how they fair in the larger calibers as well - sounds like they are doing something right these days - i wouldnt tell a lot of folks but i might have to check ole wally world out in next few days to see what they got in the savage line

My 17 seems to like the 20 grain bullets alittle more than the 17 grainers group wise. I've only shot raccoons with the 20 grain bullets. They are the only way to go if you want hides and meat depending on how good you shoot.

Hi 243 I have'nt tried the 20gr. if I get a chance I might pick some up for the weekend. Gonna go ground hoggin hope to post some pics of how this little caliber performs. Will be shooting 22-250 & the 17HMR.;)

Well I guess I was wanting to go hoggin to much cause whenever I make plans somthing goes arye.This time it's thunder storms all weekend long.Sure wish it was'nt raining.Oh well I'll get out sooner or later.:( ;)

I just picked up a .17 HMR Savage today. I put a simmons 3-9x50 scope on it and it shoots great. Looking forward to shooting some woodchucks this summer with it and some coyotes and fox in the winter. I think that the .17 will do the job no prob on a coyote because of how fast the bullet goes. Its a flat shooting gun out to 100 yds from what ive heard and then starts to go down from there but 200+ yd shots are possible. Its a sweet little caliber and im glad i bought it after reading this post and the others on .17HMR hunting and shooting.

I am shotoing the Hornady XTP 20 grain bullets and they are awesome! I tried the Remington 20 gr. bullets, because Cabela's (Buda) were out of the 20 gr., and they are shot as good as the Hornady bullets...

I have killed a mess of blackbuck (antelope) does with my Marlin 917V...it is a awsome gun.

The first one was at 100 yards, hit in the shoulder throught the lungs, heart and out the other shoulder. Ran less than 50 yards.

The second was at 154 yards, hit in the front of the neck and it exited the spine taking a piece out of it and reentered between her shoulder blades. Dropped in her tracks.

The third was with the second one at 154 yards, broadside high in the neck a few inches below the jaw. Dropped in her tracks.

The fourth, taken 3 weeks ago, at 125 yards walking and quartering away...throught the ribs behind the diaphram passing through the lungs but no exit wound found. She bucked and then ran 20 yards, stumbled and fell over dead.

I plan on killing a few pigs with this gun too...head shots only of course, but there is no doubt in my mind that it will work for hogs 150 lbs. or less.

I'm not a big coyote hunter, but I have full confidence in this gun being effective in killing yotes within 150 yards.

A couple of weekends ago I popped a couple of squirrels at about 50 yards...Hit one in the neck and one in the chest. These are the only two places to hit something if your going to kill it for food.

A lot of people don't believe this small bullet will kill larger animals but I will argue the point with them. I have done it and the placement has been 4 different areas and so have the distances.

It's good to see that everybody loves these little rimfires.I just bought another in marlin 917V and put a tasco varminter 2.5-10X40 and a versa-pod bi-pod on it.The trigger is a tad stiff but I still love it.Nice little shooter.;) Enjoy. Ken.

I know this is an older thread, but I was doing some research on .17s, and I think this confirmed that I ought to take advantage of a sale going on at Dick's (not the best place to go for guns, IMHO), and grab a Savage 93 in .17HMR while I can.
