I shoot a 270 in a Savage 110 and my boy shoots a 243 in a Remington 700. This year I'm thinking about taking my new 223 Rem...... Just kidding Rocky...See ".223 Rem deer rifle???" in the reloading forum.
|
For many years I used a 760 Remington in 257 Roberts. I used to handload the old 100 grain Winchester silvertips over 45 gr of 4350. I don't think I evr had any of about 25 whitetails move more than 10 yards. It was an absolutely deadly load. At present I m using a 7x57 with 120 grain handloads. Both of these cartridges were praised by Jack O'Connor and I heartily agree.:D

ok this is my sec year to hunt, I went and got me a 243 :)
|
Should have went with a .260.

Congrats. .243 plenty good deer medicine. If you hand load try 100 grain Nosler Partitions. Over the counter Rem Core Lockts are hard to beat. Good Luck hunting! Peace Talon:cool: |
It will be a single shot, depending on what I feel like carring that day. The heaviest is Ruger No. 1, scoped in 45-70, next is a TCR 83 in 30-06 scoped, and last but not least a real light weight a Savage 219 in 30-30 with a peep sight.

Hand loaded 150gr Nosler AB or Hornady 150 SST in a Winchester Mod 88 in 308, and hand loaded 180 AB in 338 WinMag Winchester Mod 70

7-30 Waters super contender in brush with 120gr. V--MAX
Savage 110 7MM REM MAG Left hand Bolt for the past 22 yrs. Varmit and Deer looks rough but still Knocking um down. I call that one my heat seeker knock on wood has never lost a deer. This year purchased a TC PRO HUNTER 7MM REM MAG love the rcoil stock system on it and with a 1n9 twist and 28" barrel this thing will reach out there. Also as a 15 yr. old my dad got me a 870 REM Wingmaster pump to rabbit hunt with and started Deer hunting at the age of 18 with it. 30" barrel that will shoot rifled slugs consistant at 100 yds. Killed quit a few deer with that gun. Last but not least a Walmart Special TC Black Diamond Kit with Nikon 3x9x40 scope that has done wonders from 25yds to 150yds and love it. Was going to get a PRO HUNTER 209-50 BARREL BUT IF YOU KNOW YOUR GUN AND IT WORKS WHY CHANGE? BENNY {THE MOOSE} MOSES:D |
My favorite deer rifle is a Mark V .270 Weatherby Mag. I reload 130 gr Nosler ballistic tips. Nevada has alot of open country and long shots are not uncommon.

.270 Win
I have a .270 Win in a CZ 550 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40. The Fereral Powershok 130gr seems to be the most accurate cartidge turning in .75 inch to 15/16 inch groups.
Good Hunting, TJ |
I have my choice of a Sako - 270 with 130 gr. Sierra OR 25-06 Rugar M77 with a Sierra 117 gr Soft point OR 308 behind a 150 gr. Sierra sp. BUT if I happen to be an a dual animal hunt --Deer & Elk I move to my Sako-30-338 with a Nosler Partition 180 gr.bullet that's my story and i"m stickin to it!

I use a Rem 700 ADL in 30.06 with a 3x9-40 Leupold scope using a handloaded 165 grain BTSP. I took a nine pointer last year with this load and am very happy with it. Esox357

I'll be using several rifles this year but one thing I won't be using on whitetails is a premium, core bonded bullet. Lost a doe last year to a 95 grain Scirrocco in a 243--think it went through like a fmj. Followed sparse and periodic blood trail for several hours and then gave up when we heard the coyotes enjoying supper.
Looking at the Sierra 165 hpbt in 30 caliber for my 308, 30-06 or 300 Weatherby. Hoping for good penetration then hand grenade like effect. Also considering Berger VLD's for a 25-06 and 6.5 x 55 and 62 gr Triple Shok in a 1:9 twist 22-250. I'm hunting in a four deer county (TX) so hogs will have to pick up some of the slack. |
Second season on a Ruger M77 stainless in 30-06. Love it.
I also sometimes carry a 35 whelen built on a mauser m98 action. A savage 110 in .243. A singleshot NEF handi rifle in 45-70. |
For the opener in VT I will use the new Kimber Montana in 308 Win. I will use a 150 gr bullet. Which one is not certain at this point as the Accubonds did not shoot well today.
I will take another rifle for a backup.. At the moment it's the Kimber Montana 270 WSM. |
2506
my last two mulies have been taken with my 2506
my frist buck with the 25 was with a 100gr nosler bt useing imr 4831 this was a one shot kill at about 150. bullet did not exit but was found just inside the hide on the far side in perfect mushroom this years buck was at 220 is maybe 250. useing the same rifle but difrent load. i used h4350 to push nosler new 110 accubond. this bullet punched threw the vitals and killed it instantly dead. it exited blowing blood and meat all over the place. both bullets are very good on deer but i thgink the accubond is what im going to stick with. |
Ruger MK II Blued/Black Synthitic stock, Nikon 3-9 Buckmaster scope. .270 WIN 150gr Winchester Power Point Plus ammo @ 100yd less than 1 MOA. I floated the the barrel and had a muzzle break installed. (I shoot it a lot) The trigger is tuned to 3lbs. I've been hunting with the same rifle now 5 years, I kill deer size game with one shot out to two hundred yards every year. Most all game dies with in feet of impact. I've got less than $800.00 in the whole rifle, just proves Bill knew what he was doing........

WILL BE USING MY SAVAGE 116 270 WSM WITH A BOYDS THUMBHOLE AND A 3X9X42 REDFIELD ILLUMINATOR (GREAT BUY ON CDNN SPORTS FOR 179 BUCKS) STOCKIS GREY LAMINATE WITH STAINLESS BARRELL, AWESOME RIFLE
|
I use a .270 WHBY Vangraud shooting hangloads with Barnes TSX 150gr quater size groups @ 100yrds off the bipod. 3x9x40mm Kingoptics scope.
|
Will be using a 6.5x55 AI for deer and antelope hunting in 2007. Just started buying the parts to do it. I already have the receiver and the barrel and stock ar not too far behind. Should be nice when it's all done.

Marlin 30-30.

Have to admit, I bounce around as I am interested in terminal ballistics. Have shot them with .223s through 45/70s in rifles, but nearly half were shot with handguns. All my wild boar have been with handguns.
I could be perfectly happy with most centerfire rifles for deer in any caliber from .260 Rem (Never owned a .257 Roberts but that would probably do also) to .376 Steyr (happen to have one and it works great - though it was a friend who shot the deer with it). In some locales I would be perfectly happy with an ordinary 30-30 (killed my first deer with one and have never dropped one quicker with anything). Riposte. |

Here's some results from my past weekend hunt near D hanis, TX. Shot a doe with my 308 and a 165 grain Berger VLD bullet--hit a bit back and at a slight angle. Fortunately I saw where the doe ran and walked straight to the deer. There was no blood trail--the bullet seemed to have exploded internally left a pencil size entry hole and jellied insides--paunch included--not a pretty sight but cleaned up OK.
We had a large sow in a trap which I dispatched with a 50 caliber muzzleloader pistol, 50 grains of 777 and a 360 grain conical. I'm a fair shot at 3 feet and the shot was terminal--full, head to leg penetration and it ended up somewhere in the dirt--looked but couldn't find it. Late evening a big black boar walked into a sendero and paused a bit too long. 308 again this time with a 165 grain Sierra HPBT (GameKing)--probably a neglected bullet--we tend to think of all hollow points as target bullets. Shot hit just behind the ear in the neck/spine and the hog went down with a half dollar size exit hole. If you're wanting a bullet that expands rapidly for deer sized game, check this one out--it's available in most calibers. |
moose for god i've noticed you can buy a conversion kit to
to upgrade your encore to the pro hunter. |

303 British 30-30 223 sks 30-06 50 cal. Black Powder next year it will be a 243. I have shot 50+ deer in my life time I have wounded 2 that I never found, both were shot with a 30-06 my fault. ( Young and foolish) Now I pick my shots better, I don't shoot at running deer and don't take brushy shots. I only want to make clean kills, if I can't, I leave the deer to be hunted another day.
Have a great day! Ken |
LIVING IN EAST TEXAS IVE USED EVERYTHING FROM 30/30,30/06,.243 DOWN TO A .223. MOST COMMONLY I USE A REMINGTON 7400 CHAMBERED IN 30/06 WITH A NIKON BUCKMASTER SCOPE.
I WOULD REALLY LIKE INPUT ON THE .223 AS A DEER ROUND,IVE HEAD SHOT SEVERAL WITH IT BUT AM UNDECIDED IF I WANT TO ALLOW MY WIFE TO USE IT HER FIRST TIME TO KILL A DEER.IM REALLY WORRIED ABOUT POOR SHOT PLACEMENT.ITS ALL ABOUT AN ETHICAL,HUMANE KILL. ALL COMMENTS OR THOUGHTS APPRECIATED. |
EXTHNTR
All caps is considered improper post so you may not receive response. That being said ,there are a lot of questions remaining ,if you are going to arm your wife,i.e;do you have a large insurance policy with her as the beneficiary. I personally believe .223 is a varmint caliber and should not be used for deer. would reccommend minimum of 25 caliber (.257 or 25-06 ). jplonghunter |
Ten year old Savage 11 .308 with a Leupold VX-II 3-9x with a good 'ol #1 German Post

After a few years of shooting a 7mm mag,i found the recoil sucks and the damage to the meat not worth the extra yards of shot distance. These days i shoot a 7mm-08 remington in 140gr.This is a great cal.for deer down to yotes. The Recoil is 1/3 of the bigger cals.but the distance u can be deadly at is out to 300+.I have yet tracked a deer more than 75 yards and no meat loss..If u are thinking of bringing a young hunter into the sport, try the 7mm-08 in 100gr.no recoil...

what I shoot
I shoot a Remington model 7400 in the 280 calibur.Like it alot.
