7400 carbine 30/06 and 700 in 270

Me, pre 64 M70's in .270 or 06. Got both, love the feel of the actions.

I honestly think buying a new rifle today is a real crapshoot. I have the rifle caliber you mentioned. Mines a Remington 700BDL in .25-06, and it leaves much to be desired in terms of accuracy. Yet, by and large my most accurate rifles are Remingtons. I'm one of those shooters who feel my best rifles were those made in the 1980s. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

Best Rifle

Pre 64 Winchester Model 70..Have 5 or 6 and they all shoot well. As far as the newer rifles...I think I will Have to go with the New Savage rifles with the accu trigger. Pretty accurate rifles and the price is pretty good too. Calibers..heck whatever works. Don't have much use for all the new wonder calibers. They are just recreating all of the old favorites with short cases or belted cases:rolleyes:

Evan03 09-19-2005 11:56 PM

my #1 ruger vt 220 is edgeing right in there as my favorite rifle right now.

the single shot falling block action is all me and the acuracy is scary with facotory ammo. even the frist few loads ive tried have scaterd like a shotgun blast at 50yds.

im currently trying to think on what my next #1 is going to be, i cant think of any caliber other than a 243. off the top of my head.

Tater 09-20-2005 12:11 AM

Basic, bare-bones Rem 700 ADL in .270. Nice shooter and easy to handle. I also like my Bushy AR-15 and Ruger 10-22 for sheer fun.

trex 09-20-2005 09:16 AM

Just picked up a Remmy Model 7 in .243 w/ a VXII 4-12 on it. Not a scratch $550!!! I have a sneaky feeling it's gonna become my favorite to tote around and pluck deer w/ rifle here in the near future. I also love my Sako 3006! It's a touch too heavy and pretty to tote around in the woods though. Absolute tack driver!!! Haven't been able to really get down and shoot the .243 yet. It's shot pretty well so far though. 1 1/2" or better. I think I'll be able to float the barrel and maybe one or two other things to get it to an inch or less. It'll do for now.

Desertrat214 09-20-2005 08:02 PM

My pre-64 M70 in .270.

model 70 09-20-2005 10:13 PM

Sako in .17remington. weighs under 6lbs and the wood is just GORGEOUS. not sure if it's stock or custom wood but far too pretty to bang up on rocks and stuff. topped with a compact VX-II(the old VX-II) in matte finish in 3x9.

Ken14 09-21-2005 09:17 AM

Remington 700 Sendero in .25-06. way more accurate than I am.

rainydays 09-21-2005 10:28 AM

My old Ruger M77 in 6MM

gumpokc 09-21-2005 05:12 PM

My go-to and favorite is a Savage model 99 in .300 savage,
followed closely by my Hakim, and grandpa's remington 722 in .300 savage.

Adirondacks 09-26-2005 12:52 PM

Ruger M77 syn/ss in 30-06.
2-7 Nikon scope.

Just got it last year. Love it.

Win75 10-08-2005 08:59 PM

I guess I am a little bit different. I have two Swedish Mauser 96/38's that had been sporterized before I found them. Bolts turned down, D & T'ed, etc. Both in the original 6.5x55 caliber. I personally don't think there is a better caliber for deer.

gregarat 10-10-2005 03:24 PM

My Ruger M77 6.5x55 with a Timmeny trigger, recut crown, and a Leupold 3.5-10x Veri-x III scope (I'm thinking of switching to a 12x variable power).
Its a super versatile gun.

BILLY D. 10-10-2005 03:54 PM

my favorite is 1909 argentine, "osa johnson" 275 rigby/7mm mauser special i built. 139's go in one hole. 7#'s and few ounces with scope and irons.

someday i have to build one for walter dalrymple maitland bell.

you think a pit bull with a soupbone is tough, try and get that rifle away from me.

fav rifle

remington custom ks mountain rifle in 35 whelen. light, very accurate.

WyoShooter 12-11-2005 07:21 PM

My favorite is my 7mm mag. Remington model 700. This is an older one that was built in the early 70's. It's an ADL but has the checkered stock and the most beautiful burlwood grain on the cheekpiece and high gloss finish like the BDL's have now.

RUMLUVER 12-13-2005 10:53 AM

Right now it happens to be my .338 RUM! It is deffinately a one gun do it all. Shoots as flat as a 7mm Rem Mag and hit like a .375H&H who could ask for more!:D

sladek 12-15-2005 12:40 AM

1. Remington 700 Sendero in .25-06. w/custom made muzzle brake. a real tack driver using the 115 grain ballistic silvertip from Win

2. Mosin Nagant 91/30 (7.62 x 54R) w/PU scope.... very accurate

3. .45/70 Cimarron Arms, Billy Dixon Model 1874 Sharps Sporting Rifle 32"Octagon barrel...it can really reach out and touch 'em! (FYI..The Billy Dixon story....It was June 27, 1874 at Adobe Walls on the Canadian River in the Texas panhandle. Young Billy Dixon and 27 buffalo hunters were surrounded by more than 500 Kiowa and Comanche warriors. The Kiowa medicine man told the warriors that his medicine made them invisible to the bullets of the white-eyes. When Dixon fired his Sharps sporting rifle and knocked a Kiowa from his horse at 1538 yards (7/8 mile) the Indians departed with haste. The Kiowa medicine man was quirted to death. The shot was later measured by a Government surveyor working in the area. Billy Dixon lived on to be awarded the Medal of Honor while acting as a scout in the Army for Gen. Nelson Miles. Later in life he served as a peace officer in the Texas panhandle, near the place that made him famous.

(What makes the shot even more astonishing is the fact that, the shot was made with a borrowed rifle!)

stout shooter 12-17-2005 12:43 PM

tikka t3 stainless 243 with 4-12 scope for killing paper along way away.

customed ruger 10/22 for sheer fun and getting friends upset when we need to have a shooting competition.

Skyline 12-19-2005 06:45 PM

My favorite......though not practical all the time, it is a custom job built on a Sako action in .375 H&H. I have a Douglas stainless barrel and British express sights on it with interchangable front sights. A McMillan synthetic stock and a Leupold 1.75 - 6 scope mounted with a set of Warne QD rounds it out. The whole barreled action was coated with a special nickel type coating which makes it pretty much impervious to the weather.

I have used this rifle as a back-up while guiding for about 2 1/2 decades now. It has been to Africa a few times and a lot of other places over years. Stopped a few pissed off grizzlies that my clients managed to stick in the wrong spot along the way as well.
I just like packing the old girl around.

Thanks to bullets like the 260 grain Nosler Accubond and the 250 Barnes X I can take her out ot play on moose and elk hunts once in a while if nothing big and nasty is in the offing.

Hey Billy D...........I didn't know you were a 7x57 fan. That is a hell of a good cartridge.

Hmmm,

Well it's hard to decide between:-

Medwell & Perritt bespoke bolt action in 30-30

Rigby Mannlicher Mdl 1892 in .256 Rigby (6.5x53R)

Boer Special Sporting rifle (Plezier) made by DWM in 7x57 Mauser of course

BSA Majestic Featherweight deluxe .270

Here is a pretty one don't you think?

It's a Ruger Express in 270 Win. I bought it for the wood and have done some work to it as it misfired when I got it.

Now I have touched up the bedding and been polishing the barrel with Rem Clean.

On the last trip to the range it shot 3/4 MOA at 100 and 200 yds with Sierra 130 GK's and old 4831. It's not a favorite yet and may always just be a safe queen. I just felt like talking about it.

Evan03 02-10-2006 06:49 PM

still the 2506

gona work up some new test loads tonight. 90 gr X bullets. had these for awhile but still havent tested.

BILLY D. 02-10-2006 08:19 PM

my favorite rifle. it could only be one, the one i learned to shoot with, a winchester model 72 my grandfather purchased in 1945 right after the war.

he was so excited he bought two new rifles, the 72 and a model 61. my grandfather was veeeeery pro american. i have both. the model 72 is a constant companion in the summer when i am facing charging ground squirrels and other deadly game. and they both still shoot as good as they did in 1945.

Jonesy 02-10-2006 10:21 PM

My "favorites" of course the pre-64 winchester, pre 1995 Dakota arms 76, Satterlee arms (billet machined mauser style, hard pressed to find an action as smooth or tight), or a tricked high custom german 98 mauser.
