Whats your elk gun?

A kid I know used a 25-06(because he's only 13), his dad used a .378wby., what do you use, and what should I use?

You can't go wrong with a 30-06. I use my Grandfather's 1903-A3; he took many deer and elk with it and I hope to soon.

Dan Morris 09-30-2007 05:50 AM

I use my 1952 M70 in 06...180 Hornadys, backup is a 1952 270 M70
with 140 Sierras.

Elk Rifle

I have decided I am going to use my Winchester M-70 in 300 H&H(1949 I think). A little heavy but a neat ol' caliber that will still work just fine. I considered the 375H&H I have but don't think I need the oomph of that boomer

If I ever get it finished,8mm Gibbs built on Mauser VZ-24 action with 24-inch.cold hammer forged barrel. Load will be 175gr Sierra
with 68 grains IMR 4831.Not sure of stock yet,but probably syn-
thetic.

Remington 700 in .300 Win. Mag using 200 grain Swift A-Frames, or the old Federal Premium with 200 grain Noslers.

Skeet, I was in an elk camp in Wyoming somewhere south of Togotee about 7 or 8 years ago with a gentleman who was using his father's model 70 in .300 H&H. Absolutely classic rifle, I think his was an original 1939 with some beautiful engraving. I could almost hear Elmer Keith talk when I saw that rifle. I was almost embarrassed when I hung up my stainless steel rifle with the synthetic stock next to it.

grayghost 10-01-2007 10:36 PM

Ruger M-77 in .280 has worked very well for me. 160 grain Speer Grand Slams or Nosler Accubond. grayghost

MtnMike2 10-02-2007 12:48 PM

I carry a .350 Rem Mag 250 gr A-frames in a Rem 675 Guide Gun. Light weight, big medicine for wapiti.
Recommend 30-06 w/ 180 gr premium ammo such as Win Supreme w/ Fail Safes if you can find them.
Even better, 300 Win Mag - maybe the best long range elk rifle.

Good hunting!

Hey hntr

Even the Bighorns are griz country now. Saw one up there not too long ago(at about 40 ft). I was in my truck. Bout a 400 pounder. I also saw a cow that had a great chunk bitten out of her neck area up in the Bighorns. Terrible looking thing. Still nursing a calf when I saw her. Don't know how she got away from the griz. Many nasty looking scratches all over her..especially down her sides. The state says there ain't no griz up there. Sure there ain't!!

BTW it was on the way across to Buffalo from Worland

my wife proved a 243 is a all around hunting rifle, she used a 85 grain solid copper bullet... dropped her elk where it stood at 200+ yards.. if i was beside her when she was going to shoot i would of said you are to far for that gun.. when i heard her shot walked up and she told me where she aimed and we walked to the elk her shot was right where she said... so fulled me.. won't ever make fun of the 243 ever again...sorry had to leave for a moment grinding up elk burger mmm mmmm m .. what i was getting at is you don't need a big expensive gun!! i bought her this 243 for $100.00 in bad shape redid stock and reblued 3 weeks ago for her x-mas present. just to get her out there never expect this kill.main thing get out there have fun and enjoy yourself..no need for a expensive and costly trip an equipment!!!! just have fun and HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!!!!!

Favorite Elk Rifle

I won a Tikka in 300 WSM. I plan to use that this year with 165 grain Barnes TSX bullets.

Larryjk 07-25-2009 10:38 PM

Top pick for me is the .338 Win. Mag. Never had an elk run away from it, and it is big enough to take care of just about anything that may try to tke your game.

toxic111 07-25-2009 11:23 PM

I will be taking a Rem 760 in .308 for my first ever elk (and later moose) hunt this fall.... It is the one I have right now that I consider a good enough gun... if I can't get it to shoot.. it will be a .300WSM that will find the gun locker...

Nulle 07-28-2009 02:33 PM

Savage 7mm mag.

Westerner2 08-16-2009 10:05 AM

I still use my 6.5 Rem Mag.With 160gr Hornady Round Nose.Works great for Elk,Bear and big Pigs.It is a little to much for Deer.

ColoHunter,
Good looking rifle; looks like a great long-distance shooter. Where-abouts do you hunt? I've hunted on the Grand Mesa, but been going up near Steamboat Lake SP last few years.

Mike

ColoHunter 01-28-2010 10:17 PM

MntMike2,

Thanks Mike. I do love this rifle longest kill on an elk was 498 yards.

I was born and raised around Grand Junction. I mainly hunt elk on the Uncompahgre, but have also hunted the Grand Mesa, Bookcliffs, and John Brown for elk.

Larryjk 01-29-2010 05:31 PM

ColoHunter, As a matter of idle curiosity, how much does that rifle weigh? You may start designing lighter rifles in your mind by the end of the first day of packing that up and down a few ridges.

ColoHunter 01-29-2010 10:31 PM

Larryjk,

It wieghs right at 13 pounds loaded. My typical day of elk hunting is hiking anywhere from 8 to 14 miles with that rifle. I also use my Eberlestock backpack which my rifle fits in as it sits (including the bipods). I do fill it more in my knees these days.

I have always hunted with heavy rifles. My 22-250 I use coyote hunting is also right around 13 pounds.

buckhunter 01-30-2010 09:52 AM

I would probably use my Rem 700 in 280 with Nosler 160's. This has been pretty deadly on some big game around here.

new guy 01-31-2010 06:02 AM

A .338 win mag is what I use.Shots can get long, and angles can get bad. And elk don't always fall down with a good hit, even if there dead and don't know it. You should continue to shoot if you know the animal is hit. And thats when you need something that will shoot through a elk the long way.It kicks a bit, but if you can learn to shoot it it won't let you down.

Larryjk 01-31-2010 12:47 PM

ColoHunter, Had to give you a little hard time on the rifle weight. I have run the hills and decided even a rifle weighing around 9 lbs. is as much as a 71 year old wants to pack. Used to hunt around Kremmling and southwest of Saquache. Those hills can get a little steep. Most of my shots were inside 200 yds. and my .338 Win did a fine job. Never needed a second shot.

ColoHunter 01-31-2010 02:37 PM

Larryjk,

I don't mind a little funnin.:) There are some people around me that think I and my brother are crazy for packing these types of rifles during our hunts. We tend to hunt some pretty open country and sometimes there are those long shots. Everything, so far, has died to the 7 mm Ultra Mag. Although my biggest bull I did put several shots in before he fell over.

wrenchman 01-31-2010 06:45 PM

I would have to say rem model 700 in 270 i have never hunted elk but have deer and bear.
I am a fan of the 270 and the 3006 and 308 they have been doing it for years and most likely for years to come.
I do like big bullits for big animals so i like to go heavy when hunting anything biger then a whitetail

hnter 02-04-2010 03:54 PM
