To Shoot Or Not To Shoot - (Mulies) Hunt 6
For those of you that don't remember I used to post weekly hunts based on ethical situations. In other words, there may be no right or wrong answer but I give you the chance to explain why you would or would not shoot. These scenarios are based off of North American Hunting Clubs "You Call The Shots" articles, just with different pictures and my story.
And Now..Hunt 6 of To Shoot Or Not To Shoot Scenario: This ol boy caught your eye as he was moving through the timber on the far side of the hillside you were watching. It appears as if he's slowly making his way towards you but you only have 30 more minutes of legal shooting time left. Weapon: Rifle Distance:300 yards Wind: 5 mph left-to-right Shoot or Don't Shoot? http://www.huntchat.com/hunts/muley/facing.jpg P.S. Don't forget to check out the other hunts @ Elk,Whitetails & Big Game http://www.clarion-net.com/spark/images/josh.gif Perfect Practice Makes Perfect |
Right now he is beyond my comfortable range with my 6mm... but it looks like he may be moving toward me. If he is, I'd wait until he moved 100yrds closer... hopefully the wind don't shift, and my camo is working for me..

id shoot him near the neck/shoulder area, with my .270
|
BOOM!
|
Whatta big, wide brute!
Baboom!:D
|
30 minutes? Well, time to pack him out cause the gun just went off!:D

I might wait to see if he came closer. But it would be hard as hell to wait..........:D
Good rest. Adjust for distance. Boom! |
shoot
I'd take that shot, no questions. I would go for his facing shoulder. Break him down, vital's included. Trophy Deer rarely do what we hope or want them to do. Most likely he would not give you a second chance. grayghost

;) Darn this snow is cold. kneel down and use the the shooting brace for a good rest. Cross hairs on the Front Left insinde shoulder. Now wait for him to come a little closer. 30 min shooting time is a lot and I only want 50 yds. But if he appears to decide to go on a tangent then the Rem 300 Win Mag speaks in its loudest deepest voice. But I really want to wait, after all 30 min is shooting time not drag or pack out. Hope the outfitter has quads.

With a good rest, my 338 would handle that near shoulder no problem. I leave for CO the 14th. Can't wait to see that buck in my scope.
|
Shoot him now!!!! Those big boys are predictable. He will disappear if you wait. 264 mag at shoulder, Now, What is that noise? Its your heart stupid, Shoot.
|
BOOM
He's coming home with me!
Blktail:D |
KABOOM!!!
Wind drift is minimal. 300 yards - I'd be holding just below the back on the facing shoulder. 200 gr Trophy Bonded out of my 300 Win Mag should drive through and into the vitals. If it hits bone, he ain't going far with a blown out shoulder!! A quarter of meat is worth the other three not to mention that RACK!!! Now, were did I put that knife and saw? |
300 yards? I'd try to get him a little closer and get him a little broader before I tried to drop him. (300 yrds is a little to far for me to be comfortable with. Besides, I tend to shiver when I'm cold and there's a good amount of snow on the ground there.)
|
BOOM! What more can I say.
