Scope Mounts

What is your favorite scope mounting system? Or, do you use whatever mount set up is handy, or on sale?

I personally like the Leupold Dual Dovetail mounts. I like the piece of mind that I know that they are going to stay in place. The less screws that you have to tighten the less chance that your scope will be knocked off or move.

All my centerfires had Leupold STD or Redfield. But I change scopes like women change shoes. I like the change I made with Warne Maxima (Weaver style) bases. I use Weaver rings on them though.

I didn't know which to vote for,I use Warne or Weaver bases with Burris signature zee rings. The signatures with the inserts grip better, eliminate the need for ring lapping, don't leave ring marks on scopes to lower value and mar looks, and won't bend/kink/bind/or dent your scope if the bases are off a tiny bit. They also come in offsets to gain elevation adjustment for long range shooting,to keep the reticle adjustments centered for better performance, and to compensate for base holes drilled off without resorting to shimming. The medium height works perfect for the 40-44mm scope objectives I use and they have not failed or slipped on any gun from recoil or use.I find they also have a good clean look on scopes without the large round tightening nut that other Weaver and Warne style rings have, and at $25 they don't break the bank.

signature zee's for me!

Dutchboy 06-11-2003 08:54 AM

my favorite bases are Leupold QRW bases. My favorite rings are Signature Zee's for varmint rifles, and Leupold PRW if it needs to be mounted low.

I'll substitute Weaver Grand Slam bases for the Leupold to get the scope height just right.

Now, how should I fill out the poll? Dutch.

I like the Talley fixed ring system. They are more expensive than most, but they are rock solid and machined to close enough tolerances that you don't even have to lap them.

I've used a variety and it also depends on size scope and type weapon it's going on. EAW swing mounts are great, but not reasonable or economical for many weapons at $200 or so a pop. Buehler's good, use a lot of Leupold, some Burris, rarely anything else, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Weaver all the way !!!

Mounts and such

Burris stuff is really good and I've used a lot of Weaver mounts and rings. Used some of their old swing mounts years ago. They were just alright. As far as every day utility and good value and looks just give me the Leupolds. Great factory service too!

Hi All,

I have steel Hilvers on several rifles but I now have Appel mounts on another two one has EAW swings and the other EAW rolloffs, and I am impressed by them.

One rifle has Leupold QR bases and rings which seem to be fine but I am still sort of testing them to be sure:)

I have gradualy moved away fro cheap alloy bases and mounts to get better prformance same as I have upgraded the scopes to Quality ones slowly as funds permit.

I have tried to get quick detachable mounts on several rifles so when I travel by Air I can take the scope in my hand luggage to protect it form baggage handlers:(

The best scope mounting system I have worked with is the one on my CZ 550; IE integral dovetails on the square-bridge action with notches cut to prevent any movement. Also the CZ rings are about as good as it get IMO, they are solid steel and they lock up on a scope tight.
For standard mounting systems I would have to go with weaver, they seem to be the sturdiest.

wonder what you think about the conetrol bases & rings

Leoplod makes a good scope, but the STD rings aren't very strong. I ate 3 sets on my 7 STW. Burris Zee rings lapped in and sealed with Skotch Kote solved the problem (hey, you asked about strong, right?). I use Lightforce bases, but Weaver Grand Slam are all steel as well and cheap for being bulletproof. I just needed the downward angle the Lightforce offerred.

Leupold dove tails are just fine however I have and still do use Weaver mount on light recoiling rifles.
