HELP Parts Washer Cleaning Solution Needed!!!!!!
Hey all,
I just recently bought a few parts washers with the intenetion of using them to clean some guns. I recently found out that Hoppes # 9 in the 1 gallon bottle will run me upward of $50plus....OUCH. Anyone have any ideas as to what else i can use to clean (soak my guns in that wont cost me an arm and a leg and a kidney to use? And will your alternatives be gun safe? THANKS! H |
I betcha Brownells will have a solution that's just what you want.
I know they used to sell (I haven't looked recently) an ultrasonic parts cleaning rig, and I'm sure they had the solution, too. Probably something that you can dilute with water to use in large amounts. www.brownells.com |
Mix up a batch of Ed's Red
Equal parts of K-1 Kerosene Acetone Mineral Spirits Automatic Transmission Fluid If you plan on using this on anything with plastic parts omit the acetone or they will be gone. |
Ditto the Ed's Red. I've used it for years, without the acetone, and I think it's as good as #9.

Try Varsol.

Be sure your parts washer is safe to use with flammable solvents. If it is, use Ed's Red as others have posted. I've always omitted the acetone (very unhealthy) and feel it's good as most store-bought cleaners, including Hoppes.
