181gr GC lead-tip water quenched bullet from Emmet Boaz
30 grains WC846 surplus powder (H-335 data)
Fed GM210M primer

This produced a 3 shot group of 1.612" @ 100yds
Haven't chronographed the load yet. I suspect it's around 2100 fps

To me the .30-30 velocities are perfect for cast bullets. I had loaded the .30-06 with some of the same bullets, but I see no benefit in the .30-06 case.

Yes, they are! I agree that the lower case capacity of the .30/30 is actually an advantage for shooting cast bullets - less airspace, more consistent ignition, better accuracy.:D

Who sez ya can't take deer with a cast bullet? :rolleyes: :D :D
Welcome to the club. It's too bad you didn't include an unfired buller as well for comparison. I was curious as to the original configuration.

And I am curious as to whether your bullet was hardened all the way through, or just the rear (driving bands) portion. I made some partially hardened .45/70 bullets once (457122HP's), and they shot well all the way up to 2200 FPS. But I never had a chance to try them on game, so I don't know what their expansion characteristics would have been....

Nice looking bullet. Did you buy this bullet or cast it yourself? I read a article in one of the mags some while back about casting a pure lead tip on a harder base and was interested in trying it but never got around to it. Looks like Lyman's super moly lube in the grooves. Were you able to seat your bullet in the 30/30 case without pushing the gas-check below the neck and still cycle the action? I don't have your 846 powder but I've sure got some H335. BM

A friend cast the bullets, and uses me as a tester. He pours them in two stages. The .30-30 cases work well as the neck is plenty long to keep the GC in the neck. The .30-06 neck isn't as long which is one reason I think the .30-30 is a better choice for cast. The velosity's reached with the .30-30 get you all the speed you need with cast bullets.
The NEF single shot also allows for a longer seating length.
