What to use for Colorado Elk

What type of bullet and load is recommended for hunting Elk in Colorado with a muzzle loader?

I prefer the 250 grain sst sabot, using 100 grains of triple 7,however, that is not allowed according to the Colorado DOW.

I would like to hear what others have found to be there choice.

Well, I'd advise looking at a Powerbelt of similar or heavier weight. They are legal (or were the last time I checked) and should do a good job taking down an elk. A friend who hunts Colorado every year or so uses them exclusively when he hunts with his muzzleloader.

My load for elk has been 120 gr. pyrodex, loose powder, .348 gr. copper plated power belt bullet in CVA with 209 primer ignition. I do not advise the 200 yard shots that I see people talk about for elk, there is a big kill area, but they are a lot tougher than some people think. The outfitter in the area we hunt says more bulls are lost from bad shots with muzzleloaders than bow hunters lose.
