I'm not sure what you mean by a long way.
Here in Iowa there are creeks and streams every where especially living as I do just 30 miles from the mississippi.
Everything drains to the east.
While the smaller coons seem to like to hang around stream beds the oldsters are often caught a couple of miles from a streams. We have lots of corn fields and the mature coons seem to hang around them much more than bean fields which we also have lots of.
Remember that critters don't have a very complex thought pattern. Food , sex in season,and shelter is about all he is thinking about.
What you want to think about is where is the coon going.

Skunks seem to enjoy the same territory as foxes. Except that the skunk isn't as shy as fox. Sometimes you will find skunks under out buildings.
Their main diet is the same. rodents & bugs
