I don't know what you mean by a flat set.

Here is what you need to be thinking.
1st put yourself in the critters ??shoes??.:D

You're 1'3"tall on all 4s.

Yummm is that food I smell?

Now where are you gonna walk?
Its easier to step over that stick than go around. But this "big" one well I'll just walk around it. sniff sniff I think a skunk buried something that smells good.
Its just through that opening.
I'll just slip through...SNAP...

A lot of young trappers out think the critter.

1st He needs to be in the area you are trapping.

2nd He needs a reason to go where you set your trap.

3rd He needs to step in your trap.

But remember this They aren't suicidal.

Best of luck

In front of or under the backing. How far away depends on the animal that your setting the trap for. About the only set that you don't lure is a blind set.

Speaking of coons, I think you guys will enjoy this. I caught a big old boar coon in early January in a lynx set. Very unusual up here in Canada in the dead of winter. Should tell you how mild it was (the warmest on record).

Over the years the old warrior had lost half his tail and completely froze off both ears. He was also missing a couple toes on his left front foot and he was blind in one eye. I have nicknamed him 'Lucky'.

Lots of folks don't realize that coon breeding season is in the dead of winter.

I remember seeing one old boar running down a road between 6 foot plowed banks of snow looking for another lady fair.
