Nesting Junco's
 

They aren't turkeys, but they are pretty cool nontheless. These junco's parents built a nest under the corner of my deck about 6' from the nook window. 3 of the 4 eggs have hatched, the last one is due tomorrow. I hope to get a nice sequence of photos over the 13-14 days it will take for them to fledge.
That is if the dog doesn't slurp them up. I caught her in there yesterday with her nose ground into the nest. No harm done though and she seems to have lost interest.
It is neat to watch them while drinking the morning coffee. One parent brings the food, passes it to the other who then feeds the babies.

Good stuff.

Hey, What's a Junco?

Dark-eyed Junco's are a small sparrow with a dark head and chestnut back. They are fairly tame and are abundant around here, even in winter. They are common at feeders along with chickadee's.

However, they do have ugly kids:D

I've been observing, from a distance, a Killdee/Killdeer nest that started w/3 eggs. Over the last couple of days the eggs have disappeared one by one with no trace????

Parents are still around the area but have observe, with spotting scope/binos, no chicks????

These guys were in the pasture.

They are easier to observe when they nest on the drive way but it gets to be a pain warning every one where not to drive. But it's kind of enjoyable.

Killdeer are cool. They do the broken wing thing when you approach the nest. They are a very striking looking bird. I'm not sure where the eggs are going. They may be tossing them as they die. I would think predators would eat them all given the chance.
