Scouting

I always try to get into the woods as often as possible this time of year.
Yesterday, I was out in one of the National Forests near here, looking for deer sign. Twice, I walked up on groups of deer. Looks like a good year for fawns.
I also saw what I am SURE is the same 8 pt that eluded me last season. He was in velvet, and quite a sight.
Knowing where they feed, water, and bed sure cuts the odds when hunting season begins.

checking out new area

Me and a couple of my hunting buddies are checking out some new areas this year and we are heading out to Dolly Sods wilderness area in West Virginia this weekend (Labor day). None of us have been to the area but according to some of my neighbors they swear it is one of the most beautiful places in West By God. So we will be doing a “rec-y” of the area and see what’s up, some BBQ’n, and of course some liquid refreshments to go with the labor day traditions.

VirginiaHunter, I just returned from vacation near Dolly Sods. We went to that area, and it is indeed beautiful. And yes, we saw plenty of deer. Definitely get into that area, and have a good time.

Went out to the Sods and I must say it was awesome area, the flora and fauna out there is so different up on the Canaan Valley Plateau and the trees were already changing color. We went through Dolly Sods, and then looked around for camp areas, which was very slim, so we headed out to 32 up towards Davis, and checked out the Wild Life Refuge areas off Camp 70 road and the Blackwater River. Another nice area but camping is either prohibited or limited to a handful of sites.

On the way back home we checked out Squirrel Gap near Wardensville and found some nice sites and good sign down on the Trout Pod end of the forest service road going through the Nat Forrest. Looks like we picked the area, lets just hope it doesn’t get to crowded Oh saw 2 Black Bears as we drove through.
