A civil war very large caliber chunk of lead...Would definitely NOT HAVE WANTED to get hit by this baby..From a gattling gun?????????or something like it...:D

Looks like a bullet designed to be paper patched and fired from what was called a slug gun. I'd estimate the caliber to be around 40 to 42 based in the accompanying ruler. There were several rifles of that type that were used by snipers on both sides during the War of Northern Agression. I forget which side did it, but one of them shot a general off his horse at supposedly one mile.
These slug gun, IIRC weighed in excess of 20 pounds and were very accurate at long range.

Here's some hints:

Caliber: .45 Length:1.428" Weight: 524 grains. Used exclusivly by Confederate Sharpshooters. Extremely effective in the hands of accomplished marksmen. Took out a number of General Officers (US) at the Battle of Gettysburg. Used in both the eastern and western theaters. Only a very limited number were here in the US. Imported from Britain at a cost of $1,000 each. This particular example was dug by myself while metal detecting in Gen. John Bell Hood's headquarters in Nashville during the Battle of Nashville. Should be easy to ID. grayghost
