armalite Ar-30

Ive been looking around for a good long range rifle with some knock down power and i was checking out the ar30 in .338 lapua mag, i know the rounds are expensive but does anyone have any experience with this gun, pros / cons suggestions... scope suggestions ... no real purpose for it, just some long range fun with buddies and maybe kill something once in a while

It is much easiser to get accuracy from a bolt gun than a semi-auto. I have not seen any data on the .338 Lapua so I`m not sure how it compairs to the .338 Win. mag, or the .338-06. I just had a .22-6mm built on a Savage action for long range. It will push an 80 gr. .22 cal bullet over 3,500 fps. Drift at 500 yrds. with a 10 mph cross wind is 15 in. There are no factory rounds that I know of that will drift less than 30 in. Haven`t got to play with it much yet, still fire forming brass and playing with different powders, but I have got groups under 1/2 moa.

The .338 Lapua Mag is faster than both the .338 Win Mag and the .338-06. I never knew it was offered in an AR-30 from Armalite because I checked out all their stuff 6 months ago when I was contemplating an AR-30 purchase. I thought I had settled on a DPMS AR-30 in .300 RSAUM, but now I am wondering if Armalite has an offering in .338 Lapua.

Rocky Raccoon, can you post a web address where I can check this out? Is it available as an upper option?

Edit: My fault, I got the AR-30 and the AR-10 confused. The AR-30 is Armalite's bolt action rifle and it resembles the AR-50. From the articles I read on the rifle, it is supposed to be very accurate.

The 338 lapua is the ballistic twin to the 338 remington ultra mag. The AR30 is supposed to be pretty accurate, but it`s also pretty expensive. You could build a 338 ultra for the same money, or get a sendero, add a brake and a choate sniper stock for a lot less money and still have about the same look. JMO.

Well I guess that shows what I don`t know. :( I didn`t know Armolite made a bolt gun. That round should make an excellant long range round. Rocky will be able to kill field mice at 500 yrds. with that. :D When you get it you`ll have an excuse to go West hunting.

well, im still debating on weather the pros of the .338 lapua outweigh the cons (price) but the ar30 also comes in 300winmag, now the ammo is cheaper by a long shot but what kind of performance can i get out of the 300win mag as apposed to the .338 lapua, heres an article about the .300win in the ar30 and it sounds pretty good but is a 2.0" group at 300 meters good or can other rifles priced around the same shoot better? http://www.shootingtimes.com/longgun...malite_121206/ im pretty impressed, but what do you guys think....

Rocky you need to ask Boyd Heaton and get his opinion on this question. For $1200 I found a used 1000 yrd bench gun chambered for the .308 Baer, which is an improved 300 wby. With 240 gr. matchkings it will shoot inch groups at 350 yards, and 5-6 inches at 1000 yrds. You may look forever and not find such a deal, but then again, i bet there`s one for sale right now. Boyd may even know of one.
