Remington 581

I spend as much time at the range as my schedule will allow. Recently, my significant other has been shooting and loves the Remington 581. Too bad the rifle was discontinued. This has to be one of the best, most accurate and affordable .22 riles that was ever made. I managed to pick up a few from the used gun racks of local gun shops. Anyone else like the 581? All the best...

Yes Gil, nice little affordable rimfire that does the job, nothing fancy yet a good plinker. Only one problem with mine, I don't shoot it enough! Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Mine is the 582, tube-fed. It's just as accurate as rifles costing a lot more (the action is identical to Remmy's target gun) and the trigger is decent.

Won't be selling this one, ever.

My 581 has been a great 22. Still remember buying it new on sale for $40 in Lander, Wy. Wish I had bought a couple.

They cost more now

The local gun shops get from $200 to $300 for excellent Model 581 rifles. All the best...

Rem 581

Interesting post, Gil

I bought a Remington 541S back in the late 1970s and still have it. Friend of mine had the 581 and liked the adjustable trigger on my 541S. He borrowed my manual, ordered the 541S trigger assembly from Remington and installed it in his 581. Worked perfectly. A few years later, I wanted to do the same thing in order to have a hunting version of my 541S. The stock on my 541S was too pretty to drill for sling swivel studs and I didn't want to get it dinged up in the woods.

By that time, Remington had stopped selling the 541S parts (no reasons given). The 581s I've seen have the accuracy and function of my 541S. They are just a lower cost version of my fancier 541S.

Remington 581

Have not seen any Model 581s on the used gun racks lately. They usually sell the same day they are put out for sale. The next decent one I see at a reasonable price will go home with me. Take care...

The model 581 was one of the finest rimfires to hit the production line.

Gil,

I am lucky enough to own a pair of 581's. My favorite is the one I had a Richards Micro Fit Classic Walnut stock put on. That rifle wears a 4-12X Bushnelle 3200 scope. The other one is a factory stocked rifle with a 3-9X Bushnell 3200. Both rifles have the action bedded and the barrels floated and I also had a second action screw installed on both.

I haven't seen a 581 on the used gun racks in the shops I frequent in years.
