50gn-55gn soft points on Prairie Dogs?

I'm planing a trip to S.D. early this summer to do a little Prairie dog shooting, but I'm having trouble finding the bullets to do so.

I was hoping to use 50gn-55gn v-max's for the loads, but I either (A.) Can't find them in stock (I need 2,5k-3k) or (B.) If I do find them, they are $$$$.

I'm open to alternatives, and have been looking at the "House Brands" from Midway and Midsouth...but they are soft points....Will these bullets work well on prairie dogs in a .223 & a 22-250???

Thanks!

Tall Shadow

Remington has some low cost varmint bullets, like their plhp bullets, not quite as explosive as V-max`s but they still mist good, and they are a lot cheaper. check www.natchezss.com also.

Don't want to sound negative but you are looking at $360 for Vmax bullets in the quantity you need. Sounds like a lot....wait til you figure out what gas @ $3/gl. is going to cost you to go from Detroit to Mobridge and back.

Hahaha!,True!
Well I did already figure in the cost of the gas + it's getting split 3-4 ways.

But It's still aggravating that, even with budgeting in the mandatory 15%-20% extra, that one must budget into anything to prepare for the unexpected expenses, I'm still struggling trying to get projectiles... :(

HPBTMTCH:
Thanks for the tip on the Remingtons! I will give them a try!

I haven't priced them recently but a slightly lower cost alternative is the Speer TNTs. In all of my 22 cals they were as accurate as Vmaxs.

Tall Shadow, I just replied to your post in the Reloading forum. Good luck with your trip, if you try my advice. let me know how they turn out.

I agree with skb2706.
The TNT's may not be consdiered a "premium" bullet, but they've always worked well for me.
Granted, i use them in .243win, but a friend of mine uses them in his 22-250.

That or some of the hornady's, I used to absolutely _LOVE_ their SXSP bullets, but they've either been discontinued, or severly cutback in the calibers they are produced in.

The TNT bullets are hard to find. They are expensive if you do find them

I checked around locally, the problem with TNT's isnt gettign them in, it's keeping them in stock, they sell like hotcakes at IHOP on sunday morning.

Prices that i have found seem normal, but not in the quantities that Tallshadow wants.

When i asked about those quantities, I was told that they 3 guys here local, who used those amounts, but the three got togeather and started doing a group-buy (15K-20K bullets) at a time, usually once a year.

Don't know if that helps you on not, especially on short notice, but it might be somethign to consider for the future.

In stock at Midway they have lots of 1000 Speer 50 gr. TNTs for $91.99 - Item #108963

It is doubtful that you find a better price on a name brand bullet that does what you want anytime soon. You can of course buy in with others on a group buy and get a better deal. Shooting pds is not a cheap hobby and like most anything else you gotta pay.....

I'm also from Michigan as well. I'll be heading to SD for some PD hunting as well.

Check out Midsouthshootersupply.com and look at there Varmint Nightmare bullets. I believe they're currently out of stock which I know won't help you, but when they're in stock. Look at the prices. 2000-$115. Can't beat that.

I got in on a group buy on another forum. They did a Hornady group buy. Me and another guy in MI went in together on the GB. 5500 50gr vmax was $510 shipped. Then we just split them up evenly. I'll be loading about 4000rds of .223 when I head out + all the other cals I'm working on.

Hope this kind of helps.

Mike
