GPS Unit for Hunting Big Timber

I will be in the market ( soon ) for a GPS unit to carry and use while hunting in the big timber. What are some of the better GPS unit for the money ? I define "better" as reliable, quality made and useful. My son has a Garmin "Legend" that he's pretty happy with.

I also have a Garmin Legend and I've been nothing but happy with it. It's small, lightweight, easy to use and it doesn't eat up batteries.

It's tough to beat a Garmin unit.

I've had a Garmin and a Lowrance. Like them both, the Garmin is smaller and better on batteries. The Lowrance is terrific if you want to download maps.

For the basics, you can get a Garmin etrex for under $100 that will do the job for you. I would suggest upgrading a bit to get a unit with an electronic compass.

For hunting uses, the Legend will do everything you need from a GPS for a very reasonable price.

I think you would enjoy some more complicated units, but features are often just "fun" for actual hunting situations. An electronic compass would be handy, but I won't trust any GPS totally, so I always carry a magnetic compass as well anyway. Take a few steps with even the cheapest Etrex (which is what I carry hunting) and you will know which way you are going.

My vote goes to cheap and simple. You even have some experience with the Legend to help get you up to speed. GPS is absolutely marvelous for hunters.

Thanks for the comments guys ! Maybe I'll go with the Garmin "Legend" since junior already has one and he can teach this old guy how to use it just like he programs my thermostat !
