CCW holsters?

I was wondering what CCW folks use to carry. I prefer a strong side pancake holster for revolvers. For the Colt M1911, I like to carry inside the belt on the weak side, sans a holster, because it conceals better for me. I prefer leather holsters for the wheel guns. Many of the black nylon (?) holsters seem a bit flimsy for my liking and few have the thumb break feature I prefer.

In the past I used shoulder and ankle holsters. While they have their uses, I stay with the strong side carry most days. Whatever one uses, the byword is practice, practice, practice.

Up here on the Tundra I carry cross draw. Why you might ask. Because we wear multi layers of clothing. I'm right handed and foud it much more covienent and faster to use my left hand to pull a garment out of the way rather than fiddleing around right handed trying to find my way to my pistol.

My left hand and right hand move simultaneously and after much testing my draw is much quicker cross draw when battling layers of clothing.

Also during the summer I found the cross draw preferable to right hand carry. It does not print the pistol. I'm 5'11" and weigh Not quite 150#. It is much easier to snuggle a Pancake Holster into my side. Because I'm so bony anything worn inside the pants is out of the question. It chaffs and rubs me raw. Worn under a sport shirt or Henley shirt I have no printing problems and can draw quickly. I do not tuck in shirt tails. They hang loose. I tried the Magnum PI kidney carry and that was a PITA literaly. Didn't work at all in a vehicle.

My prefered carry firearms are #1, A Caspian Framed 45 ACP Officers Model, #2, Ruger Security Six, 357 Mag. both in Kirkpatrick Leather. The Ruger has been tricked out and utilizes Moon Clips. Very quick to reload. In some ways I prefer it over the 45. I practice..................a lot. People at the range are surprised at how quickly I can re-load and get off 6 more shots.

Best wishes, Bill

It depends

When I carry a 2-inch S&W Model 60, I prefer a black nylon inside the pants holster. I use a left hand holster at the small of my back for a right hand draw. No, I do not want a thumb break. In a pinch, seconds count. All the best...

Gil,

How does your left hand holster "in the small of your back" retain your M60?

right now, I prefer IWB carry on the strong side; I have holsters from Milt Sparks, Don Hume, & Bianchi, and they all work well. I have a few with the thumb break feature Adam has talked about, and I do like it. I'm not sure if I will totally convert to rigs of that nature, but I am considering it.

All holsters are leather....I have a few nylon ones with plastic clips....I don't think that they will hold up to the rigors of everyday carry.

Give the Kirkpatrick Holsters a look. Their leather is superb as is their craftsmanship.

Are they free?, no, but they are worth every nickle you will spend on one.

Best wishes, Bill
