have heard stories of people shooting .45 Colt through .410 shotguns. Can you really do this with all .410s? If you can I would expect you could also shoot .44 Mag and .41 Mag too. Right? I'll put this in the handguns forum too.

Yes & know.. the .410/.45 colt are similar sized... I expect what you will see is the .410 used in .45 colt.. not the colt in a .410 shotgun..

In a word...don't
do it. First off the bore of a 410 is just that.410...the size of a 45 bullet is .452 or thereabouts. Now I have a contender bbl made to shoot 45 Colt that also will shoot 410 shotloads(does it well too) but don't do the 45 Colt in a 410

Aren't the chamber pressures on a pistol round higher than the chamber pressures on a shotgun? That by itself would be a problem. Can't even imagine what the chamber pressure on a .44 magnum would be compared to a .410 shotshell. Plus, as Skeet said, the bore on the .410 is exactly that, .410 caliber. If you don't like your .410, I guess you could try it with a string attached to the trigger, unless you don't like yourself, and then you can pull the trigger with your own finger.

Just remember one of the first things you were taught at firearms safety class. Use only ammunition made for the firearm you're using.

There are a lot of things in life that you maybe "can" do, but that doesn't mean you should.

not to mention don't forget there are guns (mostly derringers) that are MENT for you to be able to use both cartridges in them.

As suggested above, while the 45LC can be chambered in a 410 bore, it is usually not a good idea to pull the trigger after doing so.

There are many guns and barrels out there (I own several) that will fire both, BUT, they are specifically designed to do so. The barrels are proofed for the pressures, and ever more importantly, they often have a choke which must be removed when firing the 45LC.

I definately would not shoot a .45 in a 410 shotgun with a full choked barrel. Have seen it done in a sawed off barreled 410 with no ill effects but would not try it myself.

Many, many years back they used to sell single shot .410`s that were marked .410 shotgun or .45 colt. If I rember correctly they stopped in the 1920`s. My guess is that they had a little larger bore than .410. I would not recomand shooting a .45 colt in any .410 shotgun. Max. presures on the shotgun in abt. 15,000. I believe moderen .45 colt ammo is loaded to 35,000 psi. and it the bore is really .410 the presure would be considerably higher.
