another optics opinion thread
 

My wife bless her heart wants to buy me a scope for X-mas.She has a budget and falling in her price range are the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40,Burris Fullfield ll 3-9x40,and a Bausch&Lomb Elite 4000 2.5-10x40.It will be going on my 300wsm.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard.

I have 3 of the Buckmasters, Side Focus with Mil Dots. I'm very pleased with them. One is on a 6,5x68 AI and it's a snorter, the other two are on varmint rifles.

They do everything I expect of them. They are clear and repeatable. I looked at the other two scopes you mentioned and chose the Nikon because of the extra power. I sampled them outside the Store and the Nikon was my favorite.

The other 2 were good also and I wouldn't turn them down. They just didn't meet my needs.

Sides that the Nikons were on sale, that may have changed my perspective somewhat. :eek:

If you decide on the Buckmaster get the one with the Mil Dots not the one with the BDC. The BDC might be OK for BIG Game but they aren't worth a hoot for Varmint or Target work. Words from the wise.

thanks for the reply Bill,I usually have BDC worked out in my head,and all those extra lines and such just confuse me.
Have you had any issues with the Buckmaster losing its "grip" internally?I've read that they don't stand up too well to magnums...

No, not yet. But if any of them do it will be the one on the 6,5x68. That uses 70+grs of powder and 140gr bullets. The base rifle is also fairly light. 7 1/2 #'s. It's my Speed goat Gun. I can't stalk with a heavy gun anymore, I get all tuckered out.

The others are on 22-250's. They are not the type rifle you would want to carry for over 20 minutes in the field, heavy barreled varminters.

Although I have Burris Nikon Buckmasters etc. I also have a couple of Elites and of all the ones mentioned the Elites are the best. Think there is some kind of giveaway going on right now too. Check out the Bushnell site.


Oh...BTW ..I'm sorry you have to shoot onea them maganumbs. Unless you be shootin ol griz er somthin

hehe...the wsm is a replacement for my 30.06 for moose an elk.
I spend most of my deer huntin with my .270...or .250-3000 if there's yotes about.

never took a bear with anything but a bow.:cool:

Welcome to HC Brother Rockeye . . . just a thought, maybe you could add to her fund and get a Leupold, I'd feel a little more comfortable with that than the others. The last Burris I bought I felt was not of the quality of their models from a few years ago. I wouldn't scrimp too much with a 300, investment in good glass is money well spent, JMHO, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Deer rounds
 

Always liked the 250 Savage. Think I'm gonna make up a 250 AI for chuckles. Nice cartridge. Elks and moosies need at least the 300..well at least here in Wyoming. Darn Griz are gettin to be everywhere

Take a look at the Swift line at E A Brown CO.

Brown also has brought out their own brand line recently. It's based upon and made by Muhler Optics.
Muhler is little known, but their optics are well made and an excellent value.

that ol .250 Sav has been with me for years and was my constant companion for quite a few.Legal for deer here in SK and fast enough for yotes without burnin loads of powder and mangling pelts.
I built a buttstock shell holder for it and carry 3 different loads to fit the critter out front.
I've got a .300 Sav too,but it hasn't got the carry time the .250 has.Although I have taken a few mule deer with it...
those old levers fit a saddle scabbard just right...
