Dear Editor:
On page 26 of the June 2008 issue of your magazine (Gun Room Identification & Values) is a picture of what is supposed to be a German Mauser Kar98k rifle from WWII, which it is not. The upper handguard is much too long and the rifle depicted appears to be a Yugoslav Model 48 or 48A and certainly not worth $800.00 dollars. I have great respect for Mr. Garry James and your magazine and believe a corrected picture should be displayed to avoid confusing your readers. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Let us know their response, also if it is indeed a Yugoslav M48 or 48A.

Weigh in and validate what I said to Guns & Ammo. It is not a Kar98k in the picture and is probably a Yugoslav 48 or 48A. All the best...

Thank you for the response. To be honest, the Yugoslav Model 48 and 48A are '98 clones and are dimensionally different and most parts will not interchange with a '98. In addition, the Kar98k is much smoother and better made than the Yugoslav clones. All the best...

Good catch, and good of them to admit the error.

Now, if we could get Mitchell's Mausers to stop lying in their American Rifleman ads - they insist on claiming the M48 is a Kar98k 'variant'.
