MtnMike,

They have been here for some time. I know of one that was killed in Unaweep Canyon back in the late 80's. I also have seen on several occasions for the past (late 90's and early 2000's) 2 wolves in my hunting area.

Oh yeah, DOW has to do a survey and USFW is still in denial as to the whole thing!!!!Typical...
Don't expect any good to come of this.

Wolfies

Y'all are gonna be sorry! Believe that! As far as seein 'em years ago..they've been around. But they were native left overs. The wolves you are gonna see are not native and much bigger and the do-gooders are going to get 'em listed as endangered. The elk and elk hunters are going to be the ones to take it on the chin. An you can take that to the bank

Always remember the three S's everytime you see one. :D

If you should "accidently" shoot one of those funny "dogs", check it out to see if it is wearing a collar. If it is, throw at least the collar on the back of an 18 wheeler going down the interstate.

skeet 02-09-2010 12:37 PM

Funny you should say that Larry

Just remember that if it has a collar..then you have proof it was "released" in the area. So they can't really lie about releasing 'em then. Just break the collar so they can't find it. Course you can always say YOU found it..just laying out there. SSS

Took USFW about 3 years to admit the one creamed on I70 just west of me was even
a wolf.......State Patrol hung onto the collar...LOL....

MtnMike2, We had a very few around here before the big transplant into Yellowstone, but they were very secretive and didn't seem to cause problems. We get a few Yellowstone strays around here now and then and they usually get into trouble, killing cattle, sheep, and dogs. Breeding season is coming on and there will be more strays out and about. The government trappers have gone to 6mm rifles instead of the .22-250 most of them used on coyotes.

MtnMike2 02-10-2010 07:51 AM

Larry - these new ones might get bold as they get used to the area. And although they might be bigger and badder than the old natives, they're probably still mistaken for coyotes or big dogs at a distance sometimes....;)

I haven't shot a 6mm but understand that they can be extremely accurate. Same w/ 6.5 mm. Might have to buy a new barrel for my Encore.

We had a farmer in Western Mass shoot a yote last summer that was messing with his livestock. Totally legal. DNA proved in was a wolf. Life cougars they aren't here. Sure.

MtnMike2, Both the 6mm and 6.5mm are great calibers. My son and I both shoot 6mm Remingtons because the case doesn't have to be trimmed as often as the .243 and you are shooting a case that is basically already "improved". Either cartridge, 243. or 6mm are a joy to shoot. I use a 6.5/06 and my son shoots a .264 Win. Both are very accurate, and only about 150 fps difference in velocity until you get to the heavy bullets. I know the .264 is supposed to be hard on barrels, as is the .220 Swift and many others. We seldom find the best accuracy in any cartridge at full throttle and the barrels last just fine.
