Delayed ignition
 

I've taken my new flintlock out 3 times so far and I can't seem to get instant ignition. it fires every time but with a delay just enough to throw my shot off. I did drilled the touch hole to a 1/16" from a friends advice. it made it a little quicker but there is still that annoying delay. any other suggestions? I greatly appreciate all your help. I am using english flints. they seem to spark o.k

How much powder are you putting in the pan? I'm told that you fill the pan 1/2 to 1/3 full, and try and get the powder away from the touch hole.

I'm putting a little less than I/2 full of 4f in the pan. maybe I am covering the touch hole too much with the primer charge. I will make sure I watch for that the next time at the range

I used to shoot with a fellow who shot flint locks almost exclusively. He always had that hesitation between the flint drop and the main charge ignition. He always held steady and was very difficult to beat at target shooting. I have never seen a flintlock that was instantaneous. It just seems to be the nature of the beast.

You got good advice so far from the guys. If you are using 4F and getting good spark, the issue may be too much 4F in the pan or covering the touch hole. Another area is getting a fast enough hammer fall. Sometimes folks torque the lock screw too tight and the hammer fall binds on the wood. Also, clean the inside of the lock and apply a drop or two of good oil on the tumbler/sear/etc.

My little .40 has a coned flash hole liner, 2-3 grs. of Swiss Null B for prime that I keep to the outside edge of the pan...can't tell the difference between it and my caplocks.
