Receiver (peep) sights
 

Information/Opinions Needed:

Many years ago I competed in informal matches with a 22 target rifle and receiver sights. That rifle is long gone but I would like to introduce my grandchildren to the peep sight. I have a nice Lyman sight for my Marlin 30-30 but would like to find a good quality, reasonably priced peep sight for a 22 with 3/8" grooved receivers. It should be adjustable for both elevation and windage. My current application is for a Marlin 15Y, bolt-action single-shot youth rifle and a Remington Nylon 66 semi-auto. Anyone have suggestions? Williams advertises the model WGOS peep sight, and this might be the answer. However, it doesn't seem to be available from any of my sources.

I believe you can order it straight from Williams, too.

Marbles also makes a nice Tang mount peep. I dunno if they make a receiver peep or not

I will confirm that you can do this. They actually are pretty good folks to deal with. They ain't cheap, but over the years I have found their stuff to be of good and dependable quality.

Lyman used to make very good "peep" sights. I don't know whether or not you can still get them. A check of their web sight should tell you.

Greatest sight in the world for my old eyes, well scope better but not on a lever gun. All my lever guns carry Williams Foolproofs, except Ruger 44 mag and a Win. 9422 Mag. Great sights for anyone.

Thanks for all the tips on fnding a low cost receiver sight for my rimfires. This post is to save the rest of you from the trouble I got into. Midway was the only supplier I could find that listed a receiver sight that mounts in the grooved receivers common to 22 rimfires (made by Willams). It looked like what I wanted and it was ON SALE! I ordered one in spite of the ridiculous shipping charges.

The insructions said some light filing might be needed and I had to do a small amount to fit the sight to the receiver grooves on my old Remington Nylon 66 semi-auto. I also tried to put it on my grandson's Marlin 15Y single-shot bolt rifle but too much filing was required and I gave up. Then to the range with the Nylon 66 for testing. Groups were over a foot high at 25-yards with the sight in its lowest setting. The instructions say this might be a problem and recommend installing taller front sights. This was supposed to be an easy and inexpensive project and I'm not willing to do any more.

Lesson learned: If you want a peep sight on your 22 rifle, buy one specifically for the model of rifle you have. Or -- be willing to do some gunsmithing and/or install higher front sights. Another possibility is to pick up a used "target-type" rifle that comes with receiver sights installed. Thankfully, that was one of my "goof-ups" that didn't cost much.

270Man, it's pretty common to need a taller front sight when you install a peep on a rifle. Go to the Williams website, or Brownells- they have charts to tell you what sight height you'll need for your model of rifle/sight combo.
Front sights usually don't cost much.
