It may be solid, but it may also be made of an alloy with about as much strength as marzipan.
On the grip angle - they were about as good at ergonomics as they were at metallurgy back then. You have to wonder how some of those things ever got past the drawing board, or at least the first prototype. Especially when you consider that guys like Colt and Luger managed to get their designs so nearly perfect!
