Rust is oxidized metal, it is abrasive. Soak the gun in turpentine, wipe away what you can with a soft cloth. If that doesn't get it all, then try some scotch brite (white) or another abrasive (0000 steel wool). Would also reccommend bronze wool before steel wool.
