3-9 is the power. lowest power is 3 highest 9.
3-9x40s are the most common hunting scopes around. you will never go wrong with a leupold.
3.5-10x40 is basicaly just the more exspensive 3-9 scope. this scope also would be right at home on the 270wsm.
i actualy ran a 3-9x40 leupold on a 270wsm as a lighter weight easy cary pletny of moderate range punch kinda rifle. killed quite a few varmits but never did take a deer, though i did pass one up gal der it.
