once you learn to use them properly yes by far. In ancient times the romans as well as other armies used slingers and archers. Slingers were considered by far more deadly, and had greater range than the archers of the day did. Plus they could improvise ammo at will. It became so poopular that many ancient armies forced me to learn the sling since one could be carried practially anywhere with nothing to speak off in weight. Then ammo could be gotten in an emergency. The romans even used, at one time, sling "towers" which where platforms that a few specially trained slingers would stand on. Their slings (per historical drawings and findings) ranged from 9' to 11' in length and they would sling rocks or cast "bullets" the size of a large grapefruit several hundred yards. Naturally there were not many of these "long" slingers since it took one man to load the sling and one to use it, but they were extremely effective since a "bullet" that size was more than capable of killing and wounding several men at once at a VERY long range.
