Switched to shooting a recurve this year and of course everything changed including my broadhead choice.
I used to shoot a variety of broadheads, including 3 years of shockwave expandables. I killed quiet a few deer with those, but had a bad experience once so returned to fixed blade. It resulted in a kill, but was not the result I wanted from a broadhead. I always ended up shooting my koplin twister 85 grain 4 blades. You can't buy them anymore, so when Cabelas had 5 packs of repalcement blades, I bought them all, plus all the bodies they had about 5 or 6 years ago. I ended up with around 15 heads and enough replacement blades to last me for a spell. I've shot everything from Muzzy's to Rocky Mountain broadheads. My kolpins have brought home more deer than I can keep track of, so why change? I haven't tried any of the new gimicks out there, but I'm sure I'll be looking for a new brand once I run out. Probably the most impressive I've seen with those Kolpins was a nice 3 point mule deer (3x3 for the Easterners!
) buck I shot completly through both front shoulders at 8 yards. Buck dropped on the spot like you hit him with a rifle. I took that same head and killed a nice whitetail buck in PA a month later and am still using it today!
With my new rig, I went with a heavier 3 blade cut on contact. I went from shooting 75#'s to 55#'s and from a release to using fingers and shooting off the shelf. I needed something that would fly good. Those 4 blades just plain sucked.
I ended up with 125 grain Magnus Snuffers. Easy to resharpen and they literly fly just like my field points (shooting 5 inch right helical twist sheild cut feathers). The feathers have everything to do with it I'm sure.
I can't wait to try them out. They are one solid piece, no replaceable blades so I would imagine they are going to hold up to any beating I put on them. Not too shabby in price either...I think I got 6 for a tad bit more than $25. Hard to buy 3 new fangled gimicks for less than $30 these days
