I have a little West Highland Terrier that I have taught to blood trail deer. It is really easy to teach with string and butchers blood.
It comes in handy in just this type of situation.

I don't know but I've been told it's hard to swim with the weight of gold. On the other hand I have heard it said it's just as hard with the weight of lead.
