I would hold out for a pre safety marlin 336.
The new ones looks like plastic stocks even when they use a cheap walnut(marshield). The new remington marlins are far from the quality of the marlins of the 1980's and before. If you hold out till you find a good old one you will be very happy.

I have bought some at 200 and some at 400. The 400 was a 336 SC with waffle top in 35 rem and lyman 66 peep. It looked like someone had put it up for me for 60 years not a single scratch. Lots of people in a bad way on money right now and grandpa 30-30 often gets the sell over the AR rifle.

I don't know but I've been told it's hard to swim with the weight of gold. On the other hand I have heard it said it's just as hard with the weight of lead.
