Going to get a bigger revolver for black bear, my .357 is just too small.
Sticker shock on .500 S&W is a killer! What do you guys use? Suggestions appreciated! |

What is a Bear Revolver? Is it a revolver used to hunt bears, or a revolver used for protection from bear encounters?

your 357 would work youse big bullits.
But the only thing i could say if you want a new gun blk hawk in 44 or 45 would work better. There are more factory loads for the 44 but 45 will do to. |

Bear Revolver
Not being funny here...but my idea of a bear revolver is a 12 ga pump with ext mag and slugs. We have grizz here and for a bear of any kind any handgun is only borderline..and that is if the bear isn't pissed off. If he is...375 H&H.

You think the sticker shock of the 500 was brutal...my guess depending on which one you looked at 1000-1200 dollars have you looked at any ammo for it. The Hornady ballistic tips and Federal hollow points (which look like shot glasses) are around 2.75-3.25 per round....won't be doing alot of practice with that

Your .357 will do the trick. If you handload you have tons of bullets to select from. Honestly, I wouldn't bother with anything bigger than a .44
Granted our PA blackbear are some of the largest taken in the lower 48 each year, but your typical 200 pounder will fall just as quick hit with a .357 slug as one from a .500. Besides you'll be able to handle it much better. Accuracy is the key when hunting those critters, not just pluggin holes in them with a BIG round. If you do run into one of our 600 pounders, then you'll probably wish you were toting a rifle instead of a handgun anyway. ![]() I wouldn't waste the money on all the hype. If you just have to buy a new handgun, I wouldn't go the route od the 500. I actually prefer hunting deer with the .357 over the Ruger Redhawk .44 only because the .44 is almost too big to carry with a shoulder holster. Sometimes I feel I might as well be carrying a rifle as that heavy thing. And it's way smaller than the .500 S&W. It does the trick though ![]()

.454 Casull
A .454 Casull is a good one.
Or a .460 will do the job nicely... I use the .454 Casull for deer and hog... .357 is my favorite caliber though... Good luck...

.500 S&W
The .500 S&W is an awsome piece of artwork...
But the ballistics show that the .460 is a flatter shooter at a greater distance with an extraordinary level of ft.#'s of energy... I believe at 400 yards you still have over 1500 ft.# of energy... More than enough for an elks dispatch... It is next on my list for purchase... I hope you enjoy your new toy... Rock on and keep the faith fellow hunter...

460 vs 500
Well to be really honest with ya.. It won't make too much difference to me I guess. For Bear shootin I only need one round. If he's gonna eat me I guess I'll just have to shoot myself.. Saves all that pain from the chewin.

good gun
The S&W 422 is a good gun and they do not make them anymore...
I also have the model 1422... It is a cut down version of the 422 with the 3 dot sight... It is a good shooter as well... If the price were right and the gun is in good shape, then I may know an interested party... Rock on fellow hunters and keep the faith...
