Action Length

From what point to what point do you measure action length? Where can I find what action length is needed for a specific caliber?

This issue will vary from several perspectives: 1) the type of action. Single, bolt, etc 2) The brand of action selected. Some actions come in several sizes others not so. 3) What cartridge and how you intend to load it. e.g. The 284 Win was orginally brought out as a "short action cartridge." But to fit most short actions requires the bullet to be seated quite deep. My 6/284, for example is built on a standard 700 action, to accomodate the cartrige length intended for that match chamber.
