I guess I was lucky in terms of Savage being called the ugly rifle. I have an older model 110 in .243Win. I met a young chap, a Brit who had recently finished gunsmith school and was welcoming all firearms work while he became established. He refinished my Savage stock by recutting all the checkering, installed a rosewood forend tip and grip cap, and finished the stock with some type of European finish. Gawd but it's a sexy looking rascal, and all for $50. It's the best deal I've ever had. My dad's old Savage 110 has a really smooth action that I like. The problem with that gun is its trigger. It even shoots pretty well with 150 gr. Ballistic Tips. The action I tried on the new Savage didn't feel anything like my dad's 35 year old gun. I was hoping that the gun would be just like my dad's old one and that the accu-trigger would solve my trigger problem on my dad's gun.

I am still going to stick to Ruger. I was looking at Ruger's website the other night and saw that the VT model comes in both a .25-06 and a .308. Now, I have my dad's gun that is a .30-06 and I have my Ruger .300 Win Mag, so the .308 isn't really a necessity, but I am thinking about it. I also saw a .243 in the VT model. Wouldn't hurt to have that one too. Too many guns out there, not enough time and money on my part.

My brother has a Savage 110 bolt in 30.06 and for an out of the box-do nothing factory production rifle, it's a tack driver. I don't think that you can beat em' for the price.

I find my Remingtons, BDL or varmint, will shoot with my Savages in terms of accuracy, but I have to add that my last 3 new Remingtons have required glass bedding, barrel floating and trigger work to shoot up to my expectations. That's another $200. plus the Remingtons cost more out of the box to start with. I think that gives Savage a pretty clear cut edge. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

I have a few rems and i bought a 110 savage in 243 for my sons
as they grow i got it frome the brother in law.
i can honestly say they all go bang and have killed deer- lol

Love the idea of the accutrigger and wish they would sell it to everyone else. If I ever bought a savage it would be for that trigger alone. For some reason the savages just feel lightweight, clunky and basically cheap to me. Got frieds that swear by them but to me whenever I get the urge to get one I just have to pick them up in a store, cycle the action and then i automatically tell them to pass me something else. Maybe it requires a little getting used to or seeing it shoot accurately to alter the way I perceive savages. Good luck to all owners of them, its obvious there is something to them from your reviews.

I just bought my first Savage about a month ago now, its a .17HMR, best shooting rifle i have picked up since i bought my First rifle a Ruger M77 MKII in 300 win mag. I have used my ruger to kill all the deer in which i have killed still hunting, never fail dead in tracks. But for the topic at hand For the money the ruger 300 win mag with a 150 gr hornady boat tail does the trick.

savage is agood gun for the money.But as far as the best out of the box rifle.I'd have to say tikka is the most accurate out of the box gun and for almost the same price as the savage.And oh yeh it's american owned compant to. The smoothest action on any rifle made "ever."

I commend Savage for being the only major firearms manufacturer to give us what we need, an accurate rifle at an affordable price. After seeing a couple of the changes made to the line this year, the few detractors out there may not even be able to refer to it as the ugly rifle much longer. Best wishes.
