when do the ticks die?

I live in southern New Hampshire, when do the ticks die off for the season? i went out grouse/pheasant hunting on Sunday (10/28). I thought the ticks were gone for the year, because i am conscious of them i looked down after about 20 minutes and had 3 on me. i almost had a heart attack, i hate those things.
