				I FINALLY got a "Thutty-Thutty."

I hunted PA deer for the first time in 1958 and carried a $13 WWII surplus arm while all my older neighbors carried Winchester 30-30s. Well, near a half century later, I got my first .30-30 and what a nice vintage am it is.

My better half gave me her dad's .30-30 with the old-timey letters and numbers and a serial number that puts it pre-WWII. The rifle (carbine) has a saddle ring on the side of the receiver. A local Agway had ammo on sale last week and I got two boxes each of 150 and 170 grain shells for $7.39 each. I made a trip to the shooting bench and zeroed the old carbine at +1.5 inches at 100 yards with 150s and 170 loads are withing a half-inch of the 150s. I have old deer hunting attire, lace up high boots, woolrich pants, suspenders and woolrich jacket for pictures to send to the local paper. Now all I need is a PA deer. Adam

My first centerfire was an old Savage 30-30 bolt action. It shot somewhere around 3', yes three foot, groups at 50 yrds. Coudnt hit squat with that gun. Finally, dad got me a Marlin 336C. Now, it would shoot. After the Savage, I thought it was sniper material. Had me a good ole cheapy Bushnell mounted on er with the high mounts so I could use the iorn sights in brush. I loved it. But, when I got a little older, I wanted a faster rifle, just because everyone else had one.I wish I never would have sold that gun. I have been wanting one for the last several years. Dont know why? I have alot of guns and all will out shoot it everyday of the week. I just want one. Maybe its a sign of age? Just wanna relive some of the good times of killin deer with my old lever gun..... Good for you Adam. Andy |

I really like my 336. Handles extremely well, points like a dream, and the old 30-30 still works fine for whitetails. Gotta love the lever guns.gd

			Dom, Andy, gd and Esox,

I will try to get some pictures of my "Olde Days" attire on this site. Meantime, look at the cover of the Cabela's "Deer Hunting 2006" catalog for a preview. Good luck afield to all. Adam
