I just returned from a 4 day hunt in the panhandle. We hunted several ranches and all of us took bucks. There were about 45 bucks taken since rifle season opened. I took a buck on the 3rd evening after passing a lot of younger bucks. A 19" 9 point that dressed 195 lbs. I didn't realize they grew deer of that size but evidently in the panhandle, they get larger than the south, southwest species. Saw a giant on the third morning and again that evening. No shot however as he kept his dawn and dusk schedule nocturnal. Two of my friends saw this buck before me, but were unable to score. Maybe next year. The food was excellent: accomodations were good. Lots of deer, turkey, hogs, bobcat (two were taken including a 28-30 lb tom), quail and coyotes. Four day hunt runs $2,500 plus a Texas non res license for $300. You are allowed to take a second buck for $1,500. This isn't high fence and these are wild (as hell) Whitetails. Several other high scoring bucks were spotted but none taken, even though one friend had a 150 yard shot and forgot to load his rifle (long story) and another missed a giant 11 pointer 5 times due to what we believe was a scope problem. He had earlier taken a nice 8 point buck; 4 hogs, and a raccoon with his pistol. That's hunting. grayghost

Hey Grayghost didn't they tell you not to tell people about the caliber of bucks we have here in the panhandle. Just kidding congrats on a great hunt . Where at in the panhandle were you hunting if you don't mind me asking ? No turkey where I'm at but great pheasant and goose hunting to go along with the deer .

Hi Texan: I was hunting with Shamrock Safari's. Don't think I'll make the spring Turkey season cause I'll be in Africa again but will definately go back next deer season. I didn't meet anyone who hadn't had a great time and enjoyed themselves. The large number of bucks we saw and the hospitality made this a great place to hunt. Good hunting, grayghost

We still have several weeks to go here at home. I still have two buck tags and we are in a 3 does per day zone. I probably will only hunt bucks unless a landowner needs meat. GH, grayghost
