An unexpected opportunity came about recently and I'll be heading for Zimbabwe in about six weeks. I won't be hunting any Big 5 game, just plains game on this trip. Have any of you had the chance to use Leupolds new VX-L scope? I'm considering getting one but haven't talked to anyone that has used one. Good hunting, grayghost

I have not hunted with one myself, but I'm on holiday in the UK at the moment, and my one friend here is a gunsmith. He is also the official importer for Leupold into the UK. The VX-L is one of the most popular "new" scopes over here. I love Leupold Grayghost, and all my optics come from this company. They are affordable, and top quality. There must be a reason why most of the western world's Special Forces swear by Leupold tactical equipment............You will not be dissapointed, I'm sure!

Thanks BWH for the imput. I think I'll go with one for one of my .280s and see how I like it. I have several of their Vari-X III's and agree with you: excellent product with a great warranty. Good hunting and Merry Christmas! grayghost

Bought the VX-L and mounted it on my Weatherby Mark V .280. As a word of advice for those owning a Weatherby standard caliber, pay close attention to the mounts. I bought the magnum mounts instead of standard mounts and wasted several rounds of premium ammo before I discovered I couldn't lower the POI. A quick call to Leupold sorted the problem out: wrong mounts. I should have consulted Leupold before I listened to the salesman at our local BPS. For standard calibers of the Mark V, you need item #52507. The pack will read: Leupold STD Mark V Lightweight, 52507. For Mark V Magnum owners, you will need the other mounts but I don't remember the number. Remounted the VX-L, boresighted, then fine tuned. I am very pleased with the rig so far. We'll see how it performs in Africa next month, especially early morning and late evening. BWH, I look forward to meeting you and hunting dangerous game with you this season. Good hunting, grayghost

Leupold advised me at the DSC convention they now have available flip up scope covers for their VX-L scopes. Made of tooled aluminum, they close via magnets and are o-ring sealed. Cost for the 50mm is $99.95 (ouch!) grayghost

I have a model 700 .222 and i has always sported the same 3-9x32mm scope from Leupold I got her with. I alway wanted the larger objective but never wanted to mess with the nice low mounted scope. Now i can get the best of both worlds just have to save the scope money till i can afford one.

I don't know but I've been told it's hard to swim with the weight of gold. On the other hand I have heard it said it's just as hard with the weight of lead. |
